Chapter 42 - Roots and Soil

By early afternoon, the crisp autumn sun had climbed to its zenith, warming the stone patio and casting golden hues across the vast Westchester gardens. Gone were the tailored suits and tactical vests; Luke wore a heavy canvas jacket over a worn flannel shirt, his sleeves pushed up to his elbows, while Elena wore a light knit sweater and denim jeans, her hair tied back in a loose ponytail.

A large wooden crate containing saplings, gardening tools, and rich organic compost sat in the center of the lawn.

"Vance is never going to believe this," Elena laughed, struggling to lift a heavy bag of soil toward the designated flowerbed near the stone wall. "The feared syndicate overlord, reduced to planting heirloom tomatoes and lavender."

Luke stepped in effortlessly, taking the heavy bag from her hands with a single fluid motion and emptying it into the trench she had marked out. "Let him wonder. Out here, the only empire we manage is the backyard."

They worked side by side in a comfortable, easy silence. The physical labor was a welcome contrast to the mental chess matches of their past lives. Every shovel of earth turned over felt like a physical manifestation of closure—burying the old debts, the blood, and the paranoia deep beneath the rich Westchester soil.

As Elena knelt to pack the earth around the roots of a young lavender bush, a smudge of dark dirt smeared across her cheek. Luke paused, leaning on his shovel, and chuckled softly.

"What?" Elena asked, looking up defensively while brushing a stray lock of hair away with a dirt-stained wrist.

May you like

"Nothing," Luke grinned, stepping closer. "You just have a little..." He reached out, his thumb gently wiping the smudge of earth from her cheek, his touch tender and deliberate.

Elena leaned into his hand, her eyes locking with his. The world around them seemed to dissolve—the rustle of the pine trees and the distant shimmer of the pond fading into the background as the quiet warmth of their shared future wrapped around them like a shield.
