Chapter 29 - The Midnight Watch

Back at the Westchester estate, the clock on the mantelpiece in the grand study chimed softly, marking midnight. The house was shrouded in deep, velvet darkness, broken only by the pale moonlight streaming through the tall library windows and casting long shadows across the Persian rugs.

Luke sat in a leather wingback chair by the unlit stone fireplace, a heavy woolen blanket draped over his lap, though he wasn't sleeping. In his hand, he held a sleek, encrypted satellite phone—the secure line reserved exclusively for emergency transmissions from Viktor.

For three hours, the phone had remained completely silent. No emergency pings, no tactical alerts, no threat reports.

A soft rustling sound drew his attention away from the screen. He looked up to see Elena standing in the doorway of the study, wearing a loose silk robe, her bare feet making no sound against the polished hardwood floors. She looked tired, the exhaustion of her recovery still pulling at her edges, but her eyes were alert.

"Why aren't you in bed?" Luke asked softly, standing up immediately and tossing the secure phone onto the side table as if it were a common toy. He crossed the room in two strides, wrapping his arms around her to guide her toward the leather chair.

"I woke up and the bed was cold," Elena murmured, resting her head against his chest as he guided her down into the oversized chair, wrapping the warm woolen blanket securely around her shoulders. "You're still waiting for the other shoe to drop, aren't you?"

Luke knelt beside the chair, resting his hands on the armrests, looking up into her amber eyes. "I’m not waiting for anything, Elena. I’m just... ensuring our perimeter holds."

"You're waiting for someone to challenge you," she corrected gently, her hand reaching out to touch his cheek. "Even out here, miles away from the city, your mind is still running algorithms of war. Luke, the war is over."

"I know," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her palm. "It’s just hard to turn off the machine after running it at maximum capacity for ten years. Every instinct tells me that peace is just a brief intermission between battles."

Elena cupped his face, forcing him to meet her gaze directly. "Then let me be your intermission. Let go of the city, Luke. The ghosts of the docks can't reach us here. The crown is yours, but you don't have to wear it to bed."

Luke looked deep into her eyes, feeling the cold armor around his heart finally melt away completely. He nodded slowly, a profound sense of release washing over him. He stood up, scooped her effortlessly into his arms, and carried her out of the dark study and up the grand staircase toward their bedroom, leaving the encrypted phone sitting silently in the dark.
