Chapter 22 - Shadows of the Past Dissolved

While Luke and Elena spent the afternoon quietly talking about the design of the new nursery at the Westchester estate, the subterranean command center of the Mercer syndicate was burning through the final phases of administrative restructuring.

In his downtown office—reclaimed from the ashes of Moretti’s brief, bloody occupation—Viktor sat behind a massive mahogany desk reviewing the syndicate’s revised asset portfolios. The ledger books seized from Moretti’s safe had yielded a treasure trove of financial intelligence: offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, shell corporations registered in Delaware, and encrypted communication servers routing through Zurich.

The door swung open, and Leo strode into the office, dropping a thick manila folder onto the center of the desk.

"What's this?" Viktor asked without looking up from his monitor.

"The final audit of Moretti's holdings in Queens," Leo said, pulling out a chair and sitting down with a heavy sigh. "Every single warehouse, trucking fleet, and dockside import hub has been absorbed into the Mercer logistics network. Total valuation? Roughly eighty-five million dollars in liquid assets and real estate."

Viktor finally leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, grim smile cutting across his scarred face. "Moretti thought he was building an empire. Turns out he was just acting as a savings account for the Boss."

"Speaking of the Boss," Leo lowered his voice slightly, leaning forward across the desk. "Word on the street is that he's stepping back from day-to-day enforcement operations. The captains are asking who's going to run the New York territory while he's up in Westchester."

Viktor’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, absolute authority. "Tell the captains that the Boss isn't stepping down; he's elevating. I manage the syndicate operations, you handle the enforcement wing, and Luke... Luke protects his family. If any captain doesn't like that arrangement, remind them what happened at Pier 42 two nights ago. That ought to refresh their memories."

Leo chuckled darkly, standing up and straightening his jacket. "Message received. I'll make sure the lines of communication are crystal clear."

As Leo walked out of the office, Viktor turned his gaze toward the tall glass window overlooking the bustling Manhattan street below. The city was moving fast, indifferent to the blood that had been spilled to secure its throne. But Viktor knew the truth: the underworld was peaceful not because men were gentle, but because the king was absolute. And as long as Luke Mercer held the crown, nobody would ever dare disturb the peace again.
