Chapter 13 - The Sanctuary of Amber Light

Luke closed the door behind him with a soft click, sealing out the sterile hum of the hospital wing. The transition from the violent, blood-soaked asphalt of Pier 42 to the warm, lavender-scented sanctuary of Room 347 felt like crossing the threshold between two entirely different dimensions.

He walked slowly across the floor, his movements measured and deliberate. He shrugged off his heavy wool overcoat, tossing it carelessly onto the vinyl armchair in the corner, shedding the armor of his syndicate along with it.

Elena watched every movement. Her book lay forgotten across her lap, its pages fluttering slightly as the HVAC system hissed softly overhead.

Luke pulled the metal-framed chair closer to the edge of the bed, sitting down with a soft sigh that seemed to release weeks of accumulated poison from his chest. Without a word, he reached out and took her hand. Her skin was warm, smooth, and steady. He turned her palm upward, pressing his own against it, anchoring himself to her heartbeat.

"It’s over," Luke whispered, the words carrying the full weight of a promise written in blood and delivered with absolute finality.

Elena let out a long, trembling breath—a sound that seemed to carry away the last remnants of her own terror. Her shoulders dropped two inches against the pillows.

"Moretti?" she asked, her voice raspy from hours of silence.

"Gone," Luke replied simply, his thumb tracing the delicate bones of her wrist. "His captains are scattered across state lines, his armories are ashes at the bottom of the East River, and his enforcers are either running or dead. The war is finished, Elena. Nobody will ever touch you or our child again. You are safe. Truly safe."

Elena stared into his eyes, searching for any hesitation, any shadow of doubt. She found only an unyielding, unbreakable wall of devotion.

A brilliant, breathtaking smile—the first real, untroubled smile he had seen on her face in three agonizing months—broke across her features, illuminating the soft angles of her face in the amber lamplight. It was a sight worth every drop of blood spilled on the Brooklyn docks.

She reached up with her free hand, her fingers warm and gentle as they cupped his cheek. Her thumb brushed softly along his jawline, tracing the faint stubble that had grown over the past forty-eight hours of ceaseless tactical coordination.

"I knew you’d come back to me," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

May you like

Luke leaned into her touch, closing his eyes as a profound wave of peace washed over him. He pressed his face deeper into her palm, inhaling the clean, familiar scent of lavender soap and skin.

"Always," he murmured, his voice cracking slightly against the depth of his devotion. "Now and forever."
