Chapter 27 - The First Sunset in the Country

The afternoon slipped away in a blur of quiet unpacking, soft conversations, and the slow, deliberate reclamation of domestic life. For Luke, accustomed to barking tactical orders and reviewing syndicate ledgers under the harsh glare of downtown monitors, the unhurried pace of the estate felt almost foreign. Yet, as he watched Elena arrange a small vase of wildflowers on the kitchen windowsill, he felt a profound, settling weight lift from his shoulders.
The kitchen was a masterpiece of rustic elegance—warm copper pots hanging from a wrought-iron rack above a massive marble island, a six-burner professional stove, and French doors opening onto a stone patio that overlooked the private orchard.
Luke stood leaning against the doorframe, watching her. "Are you hungry? I can have Leo arrange a delivery from the private chef in town, or I can try my hand at whatever is hidden in these pantry shelves."
Elena laughed—a bright, musical sound that seemed to chase away the last lingering ghosts of the city. "Relax, boss man. You don't have to manage every calorie. I found fresh pasta and organic tomatoes in the pantry. I'm going to cook."
"Doctor's orders were strict, Elena," Luke protested playfully, stepping into the kitchen and taking a gentle hold of her wrists. "Mandatory bed rest and zero stress. Chopping vegetables does not fall under the category of relaxing."
"Chooping vegetables is my therapy, Luke," she countered with a playful spark in her hazel eyes, slipping out of his grip and reaching for a wooden cutting board. "You fought an entire cartel to get me out of the hospital, but you're going to lose the battle over a tomato?"

Luke raised his hands in mock surrender, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his features. "Fine. You chop the tomatoes. But I’m in charge of the sauce. And if you stand for more than twenty minutes, I’m picking you up and carrying you to the couch."
As the rich aroma of garlic, olive oil, and crushed tomatoes began to fill the kitchen, the reality of their new life crystallized. The empire in New York was running itself, managed by Viktor's ruthless efficiency and Leo's unyielding vigilance. But here, miles away from the neon lights and the blood-soaked docks, Luke Mercer wasn't an underworld kingpin. He was just a man cooking dinner for the woman who owned his soul.
