Chapter 28 - Shadows Across the Wire

While the Westchester estate settled into the quiet intimacy of evening, the digital arteries connecting New York’s underworld hummed with silent, relentless activity. Down in the subterranean command center beneath the reclaimed downtown office, Viktor sat in front of a bank of glowing monitors, his face illuminated by cascading streams of encrypted data.

The elimination of Moretti had created a massive vacuum in the Eastern Seaboard’s drug and import corridors. Smaller crews—ambitious street thugs, desperate lieutenants from rival syndicates, and low-level opportunists—were trying to test the waters, probing the edges of Mercer territory to see if the king was distracted.

Viktor’s phone buzzed on the steel desk. He picked it up immediately, tapping the secure speakerline.

"Talk to me, Leo," Viktor commanded, his voice cold and flat.

"We just intercepted a digital chatter packet originating from a burner server in Montreal," Leo reported, his tone clipped and professional. "Some remnant of Moretti’s old crew—calling themselves the 'North Atlantic Syndicate'—is trying to muscle in on our shipping lanes up near Albany. They think because the Boss moved his primary residence to the country, the throne is vacant."

Viktor’s fingers flew across his mechanical keyboard, pulling up the intercepted telemetry logs and matching them against satellite tracking data. "Amateur hour. They’re using outdated encryption channels. They’re practically shouting their coordinates into a megaphone."

"Do you want me to mobilize a strike team?" Leo asked, the sound of a firearm being cleared echoing faintly in the background. "We can hit their safehouse in Yonkers before midnight. Wipe them out before they even draft a proposal."

Viktor paused, leaning back in his leather chair. He thought of the amber-lit room at St. Catherine’s, of Luke holding Elena’s hand as she slept, and of the absolute, sacred peace the Boss had finally found in Westchester. Luke had stepped back from the daily bloodshed, entrusting the syndicate's operational security to his inner circle so he could protect his family.

"No," Viktor said slowly, a cold, hard edge cutting into his voice. "We don't bother the Boss with gutter trash. Handle it quietly, Leo. Take a twelve-man enforcer unit, hit their Yonkers safehouse at 3:00 AM, and make sure not a single whisper of this reaches the Westchester estate. If any of those bastards even look toward our shipping lanes, send them straight to the bottom of the Hudson."

"Understood," Leo replied crisply. "Consider it done."

Viktor clicked off the call, sliding his phone back into his tactical vest. He looked up at a framed photograph on the wall—a quiet snapshot of the skyline at dusk. The Mercer empire was vast, ruthless, and eternal, and Viktor would burn the entire East River to ash before he let a single ember touch the peace Luke had bled to secure.
