Chapter 18 - The Aftermath

The sirens wailed in the distance as the authorities arrived to clean up the wreckage.
Tariq didn't wait to speak to the police commissioner.
He sprinted through his damaged home, ignoring his own bleeding shoulder, desperate to reach the safe room.
He punched his master override code into the keypad.
The heavy steel door swung open, revealing Chloe sitting on the floor, rocking Samira and singing a quiet lullaby.
When Chloe saw him, she let out a sob of absolute relief.
Tariq dropped to his knees, wrapping his massive arms around both of them, burying his face in Chloe's neck.
"You're safe," he chanted, almost like a prayer. "It's over."
Samira hugged Tariq tightly, resting her small head on his chest.
"You saved us, Daddy," the little girl whispered.
Tariq froze, tears instantly springing to his dark, hardened eyes.
It was the first time she had called him that, fully accepting him as her protector and father.
