Chapter 7 - EVELYN’S COMPANY

The E.K. ownership did not prove Evelyn knowingly controlled Lucent.

Shares could be assigned.

Trusts manipulated.

Signatures forged.

Rebecca repeated that until Adrian stopped treating every document like betrayal.

They found incorporation records.

Evelyn had signed one page herself.

Forensic analysis suggested genuine signature.

Date:

Seven months before Nora was born.

Adrian remembered that period.

Evelyn spent more time away.

Asked questions about his trust structures.

Wanted copies of old family agreements.

Adrian interpreted it as anxiety.

Maybe she had been preparing an exit.

Lucent initially operated legitimate medical transport.

Evelyn invested through personal money inherited from her father.

Why hide it?

Because Adrian routinely reviewed major household finances.

She did not want him seeing the company.

“Why?” Adrian asked Rebecca.

“Ask Evelyn.”

“If I could, we wouldn’t be here.”

Rebecca did not apologize.

Instead they traced Lucent’s internal emails.

Most gone.

One backup survived through bankruptcy litigation.

Evelyn had exchanged messages with Simon Vale.

Subject:

N Project.

Adrian’s blood chilled.

Nora.

But the messages were encrypted attachments.

Only one plain-text line remained.

Simon:

Are you certain Adrian cannot know until the girl is safe?

Evelyn:

If he knows too early, he’ll bring the exact people I’m hiding her from.

Adrian read it again.

Not hatred.

Fear of his network.

Then:

Simon:

And after she is born?

Evelyn:

I tell him myself.

Something prevented that.

Adrian felt strange relief.

Evelyn intended to return.

Then another email weeks later.

Evelyn:

Victor found out. I don’t know whether that helps or makes it worse.

Victor had told partial truth.

The final recoverable email:

Evelyn:

If something happens, Margaret has Nora. Do not contact Adrian through family channels.

No reply.

Adrian leaned back.

His wife had built a secret company, created a private escape plan, and arranged custody with Margaret.

But she still intended to tell him.

Then someone intervened.

Roman discovered Simon Vale had not embezzled as much as the family believed.

Some suspicious transfers corresponded to Lucent’s setup.

Maybe Simon helped Evelyn hide money rather than steal.

Why did Adrian fire him?

Because Victor recommended it.

Adrian turned slowly.

Victor had shaped his view of Simon.

Could be because Simon was dangerous.

Could be because Victor wanted him gone.

No certainty.

Then Elena brought another memory.

Her mother Margaret used to receive postcards without return addresses.

Only pictures.

Mountains.

Ocean.

Small towns.

Elena assumed they came from old friends.

She had kept some.

One postcard dated six months after Evelyn’s supposed death.

Front:

Lighthouse in Maine.

Back:

M, she has his eyes. Keep telling her she was wanted. E.

Adrian’s hands shook.

“E.”

Elena whispered:

“Evelyn.”

Maybe.

Handwriting comparison.

Match.

Evelyn was alive six months after her funeral.

Another postcard came eleven months later.

N is safest if A still believes the old story. I’m sorry.

Adrian’s grief changed into anger.

She chose not to contact him.

Why?

Then final postcard.

Sixteen months after the funeral.

Something has changed. If I stop writing, take the locket out when Nora turns three. He will understand.

No later postcards.

Nora turned three two months before entering Adrian’s room.

Margaret died four months before that.

The timing was not coincidence.

Margaret had intended the locket to reach Adrian.

She just died before explaining how.

Adrian looked toward Nora in the garden.

A white cat weaving around her legs.

Evelyn had built a trail.

Slow.

Careful.

Designed to activate when Nora turned three.

Why three?

No answer yet.

Then Roman traced the Maine lighthouse postcard.

The photograph was generic.

Postmark, however, came from Bar Harbor.

Investigators found a cash-only rental under the name Eva King.

Initials E.K.

Occupied for nearly a year.

Neighbor remembered her.

Dark hair.

Quiet.

And always watched by a man in a gray coat who never entered the house.

When shown photographs, the neighbor identified Simon Vale.

Simon had been protecting Evelyn.

Not hunting her.

Then someone else arrived.

After that, Evelyn disappeared again.

Who?

The neighbor remembered one detail.

A black Kane-family sedan.

May you like

Only a handful existed.

One had been assigned at the time to Adrian’s aunt, Celeste Kane.
