Chapter 18 - DR. MERCERElias Mercer.

That meant nothing.

He sat in a wheelchair beside a window overlooking a private lake.

Ninety-one.

Thin hands.

Clear eyes.

No dementia.

No confusion.

He smiled when Adrian entered.

“Antonio's boy.”

Adrian sat opposite him.

“No.”

Mercer raised an eyebrow.

“No?”

“My name is Adrian.”

Mercer smiled again.

“Good.”

Roman remained by the door.

Rebecca sat beside Adrian.

A recorder rested openly between them.

Adrian did not threaten.

He simply placed Samuel Reed's photograph on the table.

Mercer's smile disappeared.

“Where did you get that?”

“Family.”

“What family?”

“The one your company tried to erase.”

Mercer looked toward Rebecca.

“Lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“Then I assume I'm not under arrest.”

“No.”

“Wonderful.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“How did Samuel Reed die?”

Mercer stared at him.

Then laughed.

Softly.

“That took you long enough.”

Roman's body tightened.

Adrian remained still.

Mercer explained.

Samuel Reed had created technologies worth hundreds of millions.

Secure pharmaceutical logistics.

Private medical databases.

Emergency identity shielding.

Remote treatment systems.

Mercer wanted expansion.

Samuel refused.

Antonio Kane offered financing.

Samuel refused him too.

Celeste?

Not yet powerful.

But ambitious.

At twenty-two she already managed charitable projects for the Kane family.

She introduced Mercer to Antonio.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Did she kill Samuel?”

Mercer shook his head.

“No.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Mercer looked amused.

“Everyone wants one murderer.”

Adrian said nothing.

Mercer continued.

Samuel suffered from heart disease.

His medications were complicated.

Mercer altered one prescription.

Celeste arranged a private physician.

Antonio's attorney prepared acquisition paperwork before Samuel died.

Three people.

One death.

Shared responsibility.

No single dramatic injection.

Just a system designed so nobody could say they had murdered him.

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“You're confessing.”

“At ninety-one, Ms. Sloan, confession and memoir become cousins.”

Adrian wanted to hit him.

He didn't.

“What happened to Helena?”

Mercer's smile faded.

“Smarter than her father.”

“She discovered it.”

“Yes.”

“What did you do?”

“I did nothing.”

“Celeste?”

Mercer hesitated.

That mattered.

“Celeste wanted her contained.”

Adrian's voice dropped.

“What does that mean?”

“Discredited.”

The early Halcyon program began with Helena Reed.

Sleep disruption.

Controlled medication.

Psychiatric evaluations.

Financial pressure.

Documents questioning competence.

The exact pattern later used against powerful executives.

The exact pattern Evelyn discovered.

Helena escaped before they could complete it.

Margaret helped her.

Grace Kane eventually discovered the truth.

Adrian felt sick.

His mother had known.

That explained everything.

Grace had quietly helped the Reed sisters.

Changed the trust.

Connected Evelyn and Margaret.

Prepared Nora's protection before Nora existed.

“Helena died when Evelyn was young,” Adrian said.

Mercer looked away.

“How?”

“Car accident.”

“Real?”

Mercer said nothing.

Adrian stood.

“Answer.”

Rebecca touched his arm.

Not restraining.

Reminding.

Adrian sat again.

Mercer finally spoke.

“I don't know.”

That sounded truthful.

Then Adrian asked the question that mattered now.

“Where is Evelyn?”

Mercer smiled faintly.

“Celeste doesn't have her.”

“Who does?”

“No one.”

Adrian frowned.

Mercer leaned closer.

“Evelyn isn't running from Celeste anymore.”

“Then why won't she come home?”

“Because she has something Celeste wants.”

“The final page?”

“No.”

Mercer's smile returned.

“Proof.”

“What proof?”

“Samuel's original ownership ledger.”

Rebecca went still.

That could establish Reed ownership of Kane Biologic.

Destroy decades of fraudulent control.

Transfer voting authority.

Expose criminal acquisitions.

Mercer continued.

“Evelyn found it eight months ago.”

When she escaped the Red Room.

Adrian understood.

“She didn't just escape.”

“No.”

“She stole the ledger.”

Mercer corrected him.

“Recovered.”

Then the door opened.

Roman turned.

A nurse entered.

Pale.

“Mr. Kane?”

“What?”

“There's a call for you.”

Adrian frowned.

“On my phone?”

“No.”

The nurse pointed toward Mercer's bedside telephone.

It began ringing.

Mercer stared at it.

For the first time, the old man looked afraid.

Adrian answered.

“Hello?”

Celeste.

“Adrian.”

His face became cold.

“Aunt Celeste.”

“You've been asking the wrong old man questions.”

Mercer closed his eyes.

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

“Do you have Evelyn?”

“No.”

“Then what do you want?”

Celeste's answer came calmly.

“The ledger.”

“And if you don't get it?”

A pause.

Then:

“Evelyn finally comes home.”

Adrian frowned.

“That sounds like what I want.”

Celeste laughed softly.

“No, darling.”

May you like

Her voice hardened.

“She comes home in handcuffs.”
