Chapter 11 - THE RED ROOM

Marianne Vale was alive.

Roman found her under her legal name.

Not hiding internationally.

Teaching bookkeeping at a community college in Oregon.

She had simply left New York.

Adrian did not go personally.

Rebecca contacted her.

Marianne agreed to a video meeting only after seeing Nora’s locket.

She cried.

“I thought Margaret destroyed that.”

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“Why would she?”

“To keep Nora from being traced.”

“Where is Evelyn?”

Marianne looked at him for a long time.

“I don’t know anymore.”

He almost ended the call.

Then she continued.

“But I knew where she was until eight months ago.”

Adrian sat forward.

Marianne described Blackbird.

Antonio created it after a kidnapping attempt against Adrian as a teenager.

Independent from the mafia organization.

Private security.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Safe houses.

Built to move family members without ordinary channels.

After Antonio died, Victor and Marianne jointly supervised.

When Evelyn vanished, Victor did not authorize the crash.

Marianne did.

She had received a message from Evelyn:

I need to disappear before Nora is born. Adrian cannot know yet.

That contradicted Victor’s story and partly vindicated him.

Marianne arranged false travel records.

But not a fake death.

“The crash was supposed to be an empty-vehicle disappearance.”

“What?”

“No bodies.”

Someone changed the operation.

Inserted remains.

Created dental identification.

Turned disappearance into death.

Marianne believed Simon Vale did it.

Simon later denied.

Nobody ever resolved it.

Blackbird became compromised.

When Gabriel helped Evelyn hide in Maine, Marianne thought he had turned against them.

She sent extraction.

The team recovered Evelyn.

Not kidnapped.

Recovered.

Evelyn initially agreed to leave Gabriel.

Then asked where they were taking her.

Answer:

Red Room.

A Blackbird medical safe house in Pennsylvania.

“Why medical?”

“Evelyn was sick.”

“With what?”

Marianne hesitated.

“She had developed a blood disorder after Nora’s birth.”

Not necessarily terminal.

Treatable.

But she needed care.

The Red Room was a secure medical residence.

Evelyn stayed there voluntarily for almost a year.

Then discovered Blackbird staff were monitoring every call and censoring letters.

She tried to leave.

Was stopped.

Voluntary protection had become confinement.

Marianne objected.

Victor objected too, she claimed.

“Who ordered confinement?” Adrian asked.

Marianne’s face hardened.

“The continuity guardian.”

“Gabriel?”

“No.”

Adrian froze.

Rebecca leaned forward.

“The sealed instruction names Gabriel.”

Marianne shook her head.

“You only opened Instruction Nine.”

Silence.

“There’s a later amendment.”

Adrian’s father had amended the trust three weeks before his death.

Guardian changed.

From Gabriel Castillo—

to someone else.

Who?

Marianne refused to say over video.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know whether your line is secure.”

Adrian almost laughed.

Then she held up a sealed envelope.

“Come to Oregon with federal counsel, your attorney, and Elena.”

“Why Elena?”

“Because the new guardian is connected to her.”

Elena watched from beside Adrian.

Her face paled.

Marianne continued:

“And because Evelyn’s last recorded message was not for you.”

Adrian felt pain before hearing the rest.

“It was for Nora.”

The Red Room no longer operated.

Closed eight months earlier.

Exactly when Marianne lost contact.

May you like

Evelyn disappeared from protection a second time.

This time after leaving a message for the daughter she had never raised.
