Chapter 12 - THE NEW GUARDIAN

They went to Oregon.

Adrian.

Elena.

Rebecca.

No armed entourage inside Marianne’s home.

Roman waited nearby.

Marianne placed Antonio Kane’s final amendment on the table.

Guardian Instruction 14.

It named:

Margaret Castillo.

Elena’s mother.

Everyone froze.

Antonio replaced Gabriel with Margaret months before his death.

Why a caregiver?

Because Margaret had cared for Grace Kane during cancer treatment.

She had no financial connection to the mafia.

No children inside Kane trusts.

No incentive to control assets.

Antonio trusted her precisely because she had no reason to want power.

Margaret became Nora’s hidden legal guardian long before Nora existed.

She likely did not even know until Evelyn contacted her.

When Nora was born, the trust structure made Margaret extraordinarily important.

If Evelyn died or disappeared, Margaret controlled the guardian seat.

After Margaret died—

who inherited her guardian authority?

The amendment said:

Her eldest living descendant, if competent and willing.

Elena.

The room went silent.

“No.”

Elena backed away.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

Elena Castillo, a maid in his mansion, unknowingly held potential trustee authority over billions belonging to Nora.

Marianne nodded.

“That is why Margaret put Nora with you.”

Elena’s face crumpled.

“I thought she trusted me because I was her daughter.”

“She did.”

Marianne’s voice softened.

“But she also knew the trust would protect Nora if the right adult raised her.”

Adrian understood why Elena had been hired at his mansion eight months earlier.

“Who placed her application?”

Elena turned toward him.

She had applied through an agency.

Agency owner traced to a foundation grant.

Someone deliberately placed Nora’s adoptive mother inside Adrian’s house.

Who?

Marianne did not know.

Maybe Margaret before death.

Maybe Evelyn.

Maybe Blackbird.

Maybe someone else.

Then Marianne played Evelyn’s final message.

Video.

Evelyn appeared older.

Thinner.

But alive.

Adrian stopped breathing.

She sat in a plain room with red walls.

The Red Room.

“Nora.”

Her voice broke.

“If you ever see this, I hope you grew up knowing you were loved before anybody told you what your name was worth.”

Elena cried.

Adrian did too.

Evelyn continued.

“Elena is your mother in every way that matters. Adrian is your father. Neither one should be asked to erase the other.”

Adrian covered his mouth.

Then:

“If your father is watching, Adrian, I’m sorry.”

His eyes closed.

“I thought hiding Nora would save her. Then the trust turned everyone around us into possible enemies.”

She looked off-camera.

“I was wrong about some people. Right about others.”

No names.

Then:

“The guardian seat is not the real danger.”

Everyone leaned closer.

“The danger is what Nora’s trust owns.”

Adrian frowned.

He knew assets.

Shipping.

Real estate.

Insurance.

Evelyn continued:

“There is one company Antonio never told Adrian about.”

The video glitched.

Then:

“Kane Biologic Systems.”

Rebecca stared.

Adrian had never heard the name.

“It owns the Blackbird medical network.”

Marianne whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Evelyn continued:

“And somebody has been using that network for something Antonio never intended.”

The recording stopped.

Not naturally.

File corruption.

Marianne had never been able to recover the rest.

Adrian looked at Nora’s trust documents.

Kane Biologic Systems did not appear anywhere visible.

Hidden asset.

Medical safe houses.

Compromised guardians.

A wife alive and missing.

The mystery moved again.

Not just succession.

May you like

Something inside the medical network.

And Evelyn had disappeared after discovering it.
