Chapter 21 - ELENA'S CHOICEE.

Not immediately.

That surprised Adrian.

“If it ends this, do it.”

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

Adrian frowned.

“You don't trust the document?”

“I don't trust decisions made while everybody is terrified.”

The words struck him.

Evelyn looked toward Elena.

Then smiled faintly.

“You sound like Margaret.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“I wish she'd told me enough to know whether that's good.”

They gathered everyone.

Not family in the traditional sense.

Something stranger.

Adrian.

Evelyn.

Elena.

Rebecca.

Roman.

Gabriel.

Marianne.

Victor.

Even Malcolm Price through counsel.

Nora did not attend.

Three-year-olds did not need corporate warfare.

They needed lunch.

The question was simple.

Should Kane Biologic Systems be destroyed?

Elena held the deciding authority.

Marianne argued parts of the network still saved lives.

Safe houses for abuse victims.

Confidential clinics.

Witness medicine.

Emergency transport.

Destroying everything would hurt people who had never participated in Halcyon.

Gabriel agreed.

Victor sat silently until Adrian asked.

“What do you think?”

Victor looked exhausted.

“I think your father built tools and pretended tools don't inherit the morality of the hand using them.”

Adrian waited.

Victor continued.

“Don't destroy hospitals because Celeste corrupted them.”

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“And don't keep a secret empire because some pieces are useful.”

There.

The center.

Adrian had lived in extremes.

Control everything.

Or burn everything.

Evelyn had spent three years learning that escape could become another cage.

Elena looked toward Rebecca.

“Can it be separated?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Kane family loses ownership.”

Adrian felt everyone look at him.

He nodded.

Rebecca continued.

The legitimate medical properties could be transferred to an independent public-benefit structure.

Court oversight.

External audits.

Patient boards.

No secret custody systems.

No private confinement authority.

No inheritance control.

No Kane criminal money.

The Reed descendants could maintain limited protective ownership temporarily while transition occurred.

Evelyn.

Elena.

Eventually Nora only if she chose as an adult.

Elena asked Adrian:

“You'd give it up?”

“Yes.”

“Billions?”

“Yes.”

“Just like that?”

“No.”

He almost smiled.

“Painfully.”

Evelyn watched him.

Adrian continued.

“But yes.”

Elena signed.

Not dissolution.

Restructuring.

Celeste lost the prize without innocent clinics disappearing.

Rebecca filed the order.

Within hours, Celeste responded.

She surfaced publicly.

At the Kane Museum.

Press conference.

Cameras.

Lawyers.

She stood beneath a marble staircase and accused Adrian of coercing Elena.

Accused Evelyn of theft.

Accused Rebecca of conflict.

Accused federal investigators of targeting family wealth.

Then she made her strongest move.

She produced a psychiatric evaluation declaring Evelyn incompetent.

Signed three years earlier.

Dr. Malcolm Price.

Evelyn went pale.

Adrian turned slowly toward Malcolm's attorney.

The attorney immediately called his client.

Malcolm arrived two hours later.

He looked at the document.

Then shook his head.

“I didn't sign this.”

Rebecca compared signatures.

Excellent forgery.

Again.

Celeste had built power through paper.

Trust amendments.

Board resolutions.

Medical authorization.

Custody mechanisms.

Competency reports.

Documents capable of making reality look legal.

Then Malcolm noticed the evaluation date.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Adrian asked.

Malcolm pointed.

“That date.”

“What about it?”

“I was in surgery that day.”

Rebecca frowned.

“Where?”

“Kane Memorial.”

“Witnesses?”

“Forty.”

Celeste's best weapon collapsed.

But before the press could learn that, Elena's phone rang.

Preschool.

Her face changed.

“Nora?”

Adrian stood.

The director was crying.

A woman had arrived with identification and emergency custody papers.

Child welfare emergency transfer.

The papers appeared valid.

Staff released Nora to the authorized officer nine minutes earlier.

Elena screamed.

Adrian felt the old version of himself rise.

Violence.

Orders.

Fear.

Then Evelyn grabbed his hand.

“Adrian.”

He looked at her.

“Don't become what she expects.”

His breathing slowed.

Roman already had traffic cameras.

Rebecca already had police.

Elena already had Nora's emergency custody documents invalidated statewide.

Three years ago Adrian would have started a war.
