Chapter 25 - VICTOR'S LAST SECRET

The same study where Adrian's father once conducted business.
Adrian entered.
Victor poured two drinks.
Adrian declined.
Victor smiled.
“Therapy?”
“No.”
“Growth?”
“Maybe.”
Victor drank both.
Then placed a key on the desk.
“What is it?”
“Your father's private archive.”
Adrian stared.
“I know where that is.”
“No.”
Victor shook his head.
“You know the archive he wanted you to know.”
Of course.
Another secret room.
Adrian almost laughed.
Victor opened a panel behind Antonio's old bookcase.
No dramatic vault.
A small steel safe.
Inside:
Letters.
Ledgers.
Photographs.
And one recording.
Antonio Kane.
Six months before his death.
Adrian listened.
His father looked tired.
Older than memory.
“I made a mistake with Samuel Reed.”
Adrian froze.
Antonio admitted the acquisition was fraudulent.
He convinced himself Samuel was weak.
That the medical network would collapse.
That Kane control would preserve it.
Then Halcyon developed.
Mercer pushed experimentation.
Celeste expanded it.
Antonio tried to stop her.
But doing so exposed his own crimes.
Cowardice won.
Grace discovered everything.
She threatened to leave.
Antonio agreed to return Reed assets quietly.
Then cancer consumed Grace.
Time ran out.
The child clause became her emergency solution.
Antonio did not authorize the forged signature.
But he discovered it later.
He chose not to challenge it.
A silent apology.
Too late.
Victor appeared in the recording.
Younger.
Angry.
Telling Antonio to expose Celeste.
Antonio refused.
Family scandal.
Criminal liability.
Legacy.
Always legacy.
Then Antonio said something Adrian never expected.
“If Adrian ever has a child, don't let him become me.”
The recording ended.
Adrian remained still.
Victor looked away.
“I failed.”
“You tried.”
“Too late.”
“Yes.”
Victor nodded.
No argument.
Then:
“I knew Nora existed.”
Adrian's face hardened.
Victor continued.
“Not where she was.”
“When?”
“After Vermont.”
“You knew Evelyn gave birth.”
“Yes.”
“You knew the child was mine.”
“I suspected.”
“And you said nothing.”
“Yes.”
Adrian wanted anger.
It came.
But different now.
Controlled.
Specific.
“Why?”
“Because Celeste was watching me.”
Victor explained.
If he openly searched for Nora, Celeste would follow.
He chose silence.
Wrong choice.
Maybe understandable.
Still wrong.
“Margaret?”
“I tried finding her once.”
“And?”
“She sent me a message.”
Victor handed Adrian a small card.
LEAVE THE CHILD WITH SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO LOVE HER WITHOUT OWNING HER.
M.R.
Adrian closed his eyes.
That was Margaret.
Victor continued.
“After Evelyn's funeral, I nearly told you.”
“Why didn't you?”
“You were destroying people.”
Adrian looked at him.
Victor's eyes filled.
“You were angry. Drinking. Ordering retaliation against men who had nothing to do with the crash because you needed somebody responsible.”
Adrian remembered.
He hated remembering.
Victor continued.
“I thought if I put a child in your arms then, you'd turn her into a fortress.”
Adrian looked down.
Probably.
The truth hurt because it did not excuse Victor.
But it explained him.
“What happens now?” Adrian asked.
Victor smiled sadly.
“I resign.”
“Foundation?”
“All of it.”
Adrian stared.
Victor removed the Kane signet ring Antonio had given him forty years earlier.
Placed it on the table.
“I'm tired.”
No prison.
Not yet.
Investigators would decide whether Victor's lies and actions crossed criminal lines.
He agreed to cooperate fully.
No immunity demanded.
No threats.
Before Adrian left, Victor asked:
“Do you forgive me?”
Adrian stopped.
“No.”
Victor nodded.
Then Adrian continued:
“But I might someday.”
Victor looked up.
That was more than he expected.
May you like
Adrian left the ring on the table.
He did not want it.
