Chapter 13 - KANE BIOLOGIC SYSTEMS

Kane Biologic Systems officially did not exist.
Unofficially, pieces of it did.
Private rehabilitation clinics.
Medical transport.
Secure pharmacies.
Mental-health retreat properties.
Emergency residences.
Built across decades through subsidiaries.
Antonio created the network after Grace’s illness because powerful families often needed privacy.
Good intention.
Dangerous opacity.
Rebecca uncovered payments continuing long after Antonio died.
Who controlled the network now?
A board hidden inside the Nora trust.
Three directors.
Marianne Vale.
Victor Kane.
And Dr. Malcolm Price.
The retired physician who first admitted Evelyn had been pregnant.
Adrian stared at Malcolm’s name.
Again.
They confronted him.
This time he did not pretend ignorance.
“I was medical director.”
“For Blackbird?”
“For Kane Biologic.”
“Did you hold Evelyn in Pennsylvania?”
“I treated her.”
“Did you stop her leaving?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
Malcolm looked ashamed.
“Security.”
“Under whose order?”
“The board.”
Victor denied voting for confinement.
Marianne denied.
Which left Malcolm.
He shook his head.
“I voted against.”
Then somebody forged a board resolution.
Again, documents used as weapons.
Who benefited?
Kane Biologic’s finances showed millions diverted into a research foundation called Halcyon Trust.
Not medical research exactly.
Behavioral resilience.
Executive performance.
Stress.
Sleep.
Cognitive impairment.
Adrian’s face hardened.
This network had quietly studied how sleep deprivation affected decision-making among high-pressure executives.
Legal research in some settings.
Potentially weaponizable in others.
Evelyn discovered patient files that appeared to include unwilling subjects from criminal families.
Men placed into “recovery” programs after breakdowns.
Their behavior tracked.
Some later lost companies or voting authority.
The pattern resembled what almost happened to Adrian.
Different story merging? It's okay if logically connected. Need not be too similar to prior. But user's current story about locket and hidden daughter. Fine.
Evelyn threatened to expose it.
That may be why Red Room protection became confinement.
She was not merely hiding Nora.
She knew too much about the medical network.
Adrian asked Malcolm:
“Where was she moved eight months ago?”
Malcolm looked confused.
“She wasn’t moved.”
“What?”
“She escaped.”
Silence.
“How?”
“Someone inside helped.”
“Who?”
“A nurse.”
Name:
Claire Donovan.
Same nurse from Vermont.
Adrian froze.
Claire had told Elena part of the birth story.
She never mentioned later working at Red Room.
“She lied.”
“By omission,” Rebecca corrected.
Adrian called.
Claire did not answer.
Her New Hampshire house was empty.
Neighbors said she left two days after Elena visited.
Prepared.
Not panicked.
Claire had known Adrian’s investigation was getting close.
Why help Evelyn escape?
Probably loyalty.
Where?
Unknown.
Then Roman found traffic footage from eight months earlier.
Claire’s car leaving Pennsylvania.
Passenger:
A dark-haired woman.
Thin.
Face partly visible.
Facial comparison suggested Evelyn.
They traveled north.
Last camera:
Near Canadian border.
No confirmed crossing.
Then another vehicle joined.
Registered to:
Gabriel Castillo.
Gabriel had claimed Evelyn remained protected somewhere.
Maybe he helped her disappear again.
Adrian called the number Gabriel previously used.
Dead.
Then Nora did something no adult expected.
At dinner she opened her locket and pulled at the chain.
A tiny metal bead came loose.
Elena panicked.
“Don’t break it.”
Nora said:
“Mommy picture sound.”
Everyone stared.
“What?”
She shook the bead.
Faint rattle.
Adrian had it examined.
Inside:
A tiny old-fashioned memory capsule.
One audio file.
Evelyn’s voice.
Short.
“If Nora has reached Adrian, then Margaret is gone and Gabriel probably failed.”
Adrian stopped.
Then:
“Adrian, Claire knows where I chose to go. Do not hunt her. Ask why I am still afraid to come home.”
Silence.
Adrian listened again.
Not where.
Why.
May you like
He had spent months searching geography.
Evelyn wanted him to examine himself.
