Chapter 22 - THE NINE MINUTES.

Seventeen minutes before Roman found the vehicle.

Twenty-three before police surrounded it.

No gunfight.

No dramatic highway collision.

The driver surrendered.

Nora sat in the backseat eating animal crackers.

Completely confused.

Elena reached her first.

Nora started crying only when she saw her mother crying.

“Mommy?”

Elena pulled her close.

Adrian stopped several feet away.

Every instinct demanded he take Nora into his own arms.

But she needed Elena first.

So he waited.

Nora eventually saw him.

“Daddy!”

Then he moved.

He held both of them.

Evelyn arrived moments later.

Stopped when Nora saw her.

The relationship was still new.

Evelyn was “Mommy Evelyn.”

Not replacement.

Not stranger.

Something being built carefully.

Nora reached one arm toward her.

That was enough.

Four people stood on the roadside holding one child.

A family nobody would have designed.

But real anyway.

The woman in the front passenger seat was a licensed social worker.

She had been hired through a private emergency-placement contractor.

She believed the papers were legitimate.

The driver worked for a transport company.

Same.

No villains.

Just professionals given convincing documents.

Rebecca examined the custody order.

Court seal forged.

Judge's signature copied.

Medical emergency declaration.

And authorization from—

The Kane Family Foundation.

Victor stared at the paper.

“I didn't sign this.”

Adrian believed him.

For once.

Celeste had access to old foundation systems.

Enough to create the appearance of authority.

Police searched her museum office.

Empty.

Hotel.

Empty.

Boston home.

Empty.

Celeste had vanished.

But Nora's brief abduction changed something.

Federal prosecutors no longer treated the matter as only corporate misconduct.

Child abduction conspiracy.

Forgery.

Fraud.

Medical confinement.

Obstruction.

Celeste had crossed into territory money could not easily soften.

Raymond provided addresses.

One stood out.

An old Kane Foundation retreat in Pennsylvania.

Three miles from the original Red Room.

Adrian wanted to go.

Rebecca said no.

“You are not law enforcement.”

“She's my aunt.”

“Still not law enforcement.”

“She took my daughter.”

“Nora is safe.”

That sentence saved him.

Safe.

He looked at Evelyn.

She nodded.

“Stay.”

So Adrian stayed.

Federal agents entered the property.

Celeste was not there.

But Claire Donovan was.

Alive.

Voluntarily waiting.

Claire had been helping investigators quietly.

She had not trusted Kane channels.

Reasonable.

Again.

She handed agents a hard drive.

Records copied from Red Room before Evelyn escaped.

Security footage.

Medication logs.

Board communications.

Then one video.

Celeste visiting Evelyn.

Six months after confinement began.

Evelyn sat in a chair.

Thin.

Angry.

Celeste stood across from her.

The audio was clear.

“You can leave when you sign.”

“Sign what?”

“Temporary Reed control authority.”

“No.”

“Then you stay.”

“You're kidnapping me.”

“I'm protecting Nora.”

“From who?”

Celeste answered:

“Adrian.”

Adrian watched the video twice.

Then Evelyn took the laptop from him.

“Enough.”

He looked at her.

“You lived through that.”

“Yes.”

“Because of my family.”

“Because of Celeste.”

Evelyn's voice hardened.

“Do not turn her choice into inherited guilt. That's how these people justify everything.”

Adrian stared.

Then nodded.

The final minutes of the video mattered more.

Celeste left.

Another person entered.

Victor.

Adrian froze.

Victor approached Evelyn.

Unlocked the door.

And whispered:

“I can't get you out tonight. But I can make sure they stop medicating you.”

Victor had been helping.

Secretly.

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“He lied to you.”

“Yes.”

“He also kept me alive.”

Complexity.

Again.

Adrian called Victor.

The old man answered.

Adrian said only:

“Thank you.”

Victor went silent.

Then:

“I should've done more.”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

May you like

“I know.”

For once, that was enough.
