Chapter 14 - WHY EVELYN STAYED AWAY

Adrian did something his younger self would have despised.
He went to therapy.
Not because Rebecca suggested it.
Though she did.
Not because Elena told him Nora deserved a stable father.
Though she did.
Because Evelyn’s message asked one question he could not intimidate into silence.
Why am I still afraid to come home?
Adrian knew the easy answer.
Enemies.
Trusts.
Medical network.
Victor.
Gabriel.
Blackbird.
Those were real.
But not complete.
He had been controlling.
Not physically violent with Evelyn.
Never struck her.
That fact had allowed him to ignore everything else.
He tracked her location.
Reviewed her spending.
Assigned guards without consent.
Blocked her from leaving arguments because “security was outside.”
Read reports about friends she met.
Called it protection.
Evelyn called it living under surveillance.
Adrian called her ungrateful.
That memory hurt.
One argument returned clearly.
“You don’t trust me,” Adrian had said.
Evelyn answered:
“I don’t trust what you become when you’re afraid.”
He had never understood.
Now he did.
When Evelyn discovered she was pregnant, telling Adrian meant activating not only his love but his machinery.
Guards.
Lawyers.
Trusts.
Family.
Control.
She feared his response as much as the external threat.
Adrian told Elena this.
She listened.
Did not comfort.
“You see why she hid Nora.”
“Yes.”
“Does that make it right?”
“No.”
Good.
Complexity again.
Adrian changed practical things.
Nora’s life would not be secured by cages.
No permanent guard shadow at school.
Elena approved security plans.
Nora could stay at Elena’s home.
Adrian visited rather than demanding relocation.
When Nora slept at the mansion, her room had no hidden cameras.
Only disclosed doorway security.
He put everything in writing.
Elena joked:
“You think contracts make you emotionally healthy?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Nora adapted easily.
She called him Daddy.
Still called Elena Mommy.
Asked about Evelyn sometimes.
Adrian answered truthfully:
“She loves you. She’s somewhere we haven’t found.”
“Why?”
“She’s scared.”
“Of you?”
He almost lied.
Then:
“Maybe partly.”
Nora looked sad.
“You bad?”
“I’ve done bad things.”
“Still?”
“I’m trying to do better.”
She climbed into his lap.
“Okay.”
Children were terrifyingly generous.
Adrian refused to misuse it.
Then Claire Donovan contacted Elena.
Not Adrian.
A handwritten letter arrived through the shelter where Elena’s mother once volunteered.
Claire said Evelyn was alive.
Safe.
She would not disclose location.
But Evelyn had agreed to one condition for contact.
Adrian must publicly separate himself from Kane Biologic Systems and relinquish any control over Nora’s trust until an independent court reviewed it.
Adrian did both.
His attorneys called the second reckless.
He answered:
“Good.”
Then Evelyn agreed to a video call.
No location data.
No tracing.
Adrian sat alone except for Rebecca in another room to certify no technical tracking.
Screen turned on.
Evelyn appeared.
Alive.
Older.
Beautiful.
Adrian forgot language.
She did too.
For nearly thirty seconds neither spoke.
Then:
“Hi.”
Adrian cried.
No shame.
“Hi.”
“You found her.”
“Yes.”
“How is she?”
“Perfect.”
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“She has your eyes.”
“So everyone keeps saying.”
Silence.
“Will you come home?”
Evelyn’s smile disappeared.
“Not yet.”
The words hurt.
Adrian nodded.
“Okay.”
She seemed surprised.
Old Adrian would have demanded.
“Why?”
“Because there’s still someone inside Kane Biologic who knows Nora exists.”
“Mallory? Samuel?” Wrong story! Those names from prior. Don't use. Need current suspects: Victor, Malcolm, Marianne, Gabriel, Claire. Evelyn says "None of them." Better.
“Victor?”
“No.”
“Malcolm?”
“No.”
“Gabriel?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Evelyn looked offscreen.
Fear returned.
“The person who altered Antonio’s trust.”
Adrian froze.
“What alteration?”
“The one that made Nora the beneficiary.”
Rebecca had assumed it was Antonio’s legitimate amendment.
Evelyn whispered:
“Antonio never wrote that clause.”
The screen went black.
Connection ended.
Someone had changed the family trust before Nora was even born.
May you like
Which meant Nora’s existence had not triggered an old inheritance mechanism.
Someone had designed that mechanism specifically around Adrian’s future child.
