Chapter 24 - THE LAST RED ROOM.

Not because Adrian ordered it.

Because federal agents had enough.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Unlawful confinement.

Child abduction conspiracy.

Medical record manipulation.

Obstruction.

Financial crimes.

Her attorneys immediately promised a fight.

Adrian expected nothing less.

But one question remained.

Halcyon.

Celeste claimed pieces of it existed beyond her authority.

Mercer confirmed.

Malcolm confirmed.

Claire confirmed.

A network.

Not enormous.

But old.

Private physicians.

Corporate attorneys.

Security consultants.

Wealth managers.

People who discovered that controlling an unstable executive could be more profitable than competing with one.

The final archive was inside the original Red Room facility.

Not on servers.

Paper.

Celeste trusted paper.

Adrian hated agreeing with her about anything.

Federal investigators searched the building.

Evelyn chose to go.

Not because they needed her.

Because she needed to see it without being imprisoned inside it.

Adrian went only after she invited him.

The Red Room was smaller than he imagined.

Red walls.

Single bed.

Desk.

Window that opened only four inches.

Evelyn stood in the doorway.

Adrian stayed behind her.

She entered.

Touched the wall.

Then turned.

“I used to imagine you breaking the door down.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I wish I had.”

“No.”

He stared.

Evelyn continued.

“I wanted you to save me because I was afraid I couldn't save myself.”

She looked around.

“But Claire helped me.”

“Yes.”

“Marianne helped.”

“Yes.”

“Victor eventually helped.”

“Yes.”

“And I walked out.”

Adrian nodded.

“You did.”

She smiled through tears.

“That matters.”

Agents opened a concealed archive room.

Hundreds of files.

Executives.

Family members.

Witnesses.

Patients.

Some voluntary.

Others questionable.

Enough evidence to dismantle Halcyon completely.

Then Rebecca found one file with Adrian's name.

He stared.

ADRIAN KANE.

Behavioral profile.

Age nineteen onward.

Risk tolerance.

Attachment patterns.

Sleep habits.

Anger response.

Substance exposure.

Relationship vulnerability.

Evelyn looked horrified.

“They studied you.”

Adrian turned pages.

Reports came from people inside his father's organization.

Doctors.

Security.

Staff.

Even after Antonio died.

Halcyon had treated Adrian himself as a subject.

Not imprisoned.

Observed.

Influenced.

Victor read the file later.

His face broke.

“I didn't know.”

Adrian believed him.

The final report was signed:

C. KANE.

Celeste.

She had spent years criticizing Adrian's instability while secretly documenting and provoking it.

Some business crises had been manufactured.

Some security scares exaggerated.

Some medical prescriptions adjusted.

Not enough to control every decision.

Enough to influence.

Adrian sat silently.

Evelyn waited.

Finally he said:

“Part of me wants this to mean none of my worst choices were mine.”

Evelyn sat beside him.

“But?”

“They were.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at the file.

“They manipulated me.”

“Yes.”

“I still made choices.”

“Yes.”

He laughed softly.

“You've become very annoying.”

“You married me.”

“Apparently.”

For the first time in three years, Evelyn laughed with him.

Not memory.

Not video.

Not telephone.

In the room where others had tried to remove her choices.

The sound felt like victory.

Agents boxed the records.

The Red Room was closed.

Not hidden.

Not preserved.

Closed by court order.

Three weeks later the building was transferred to an independent patient-rights organization.

Evelyn made one request.

May you like

Paint the walls.

Anything but red.
