Chapter 23 - THE PAGE CELESTE COULD NOT DESTROY.

The bottom corner had been burned.
Rebecca reconstructed most of it from infrared imaging.
One paragraph remained hidden beneath damage.
Arthur Bell provided the original carbon impression.
Slowly, words emerged.
Grace had created a final safeguard.
If any Kane family member used Nora's existence to gain control of Reed assets, ownership automatically transferred away from all Kane interests.
To whom?
A charitable medical trust.
Controlled jointly by two Reed branches.
Helena's.
Margaret's.
Evelyn.
Elena.
Celeste had spent decades trying to prevent exactly that outcome.
Adrian almost admired the irony.
Every attempt to control Nora pushed the company farther from Kane hands.
Grace had anticipated men like Antonio.
She had not anticipated Celeste.
But the safeguard still worked.
The court confirmed it.
Kane Biologic no longer belonged to Adrian.
Or Victor.
Or Celeste.
Or the Kane Foundation.
Adrian signed the acknowledgment voluntarily.
A reporter asked him outside court:
“Mr. Kane, how much did you just lose?”
Adrian looked toward Elena carrying Nora down the courthouse steps.
Evelyn beside them.
“Nothing that was mine.”
The quote went everywhere.
Celeste saw it too.
Roman knew because her attorney called ten minutes later.
She wanted a meeting.
No prosecutors.
No police.
No weapons.
Rebecca laughed.
“No.”
Celeste threatened to release Kane criminal records.
Adrian surprised everyone.
“Tell her to release them.”
Roman stared.
“Boss.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
“Those records include us.”
“Yes.”
“Businesses.”
“Yes.”
“People.”
“Yes.”
“You're prepared for that?”
Adrian looked toward Evelyn.
Three years earlier she had asked him to leave parts of the organization.
He refused.
Then lost her.
Now he understood the cost of believing family power mattered more than everything around it.
“Anything criminal gets handled legally.”
Roman laughed without humor.
“You know how many people will hate that?”
“Yes.”
“Some will come after you.”
“Yes.”
“Still?”
“Yes.”
Roman sighed.
“Fine.”
Adrian smiled faintly.
“You can leave.”
Roman looked offended.
“Absolutely not.”
Rebecca arranged a monitored meeting through Celeste's lawyer.
Neutral conference center.
Federal authorities knew.
Celeste entered wearing gray.
Perfect hair.
Perfect posture.
No panic.
She looked at Adrian.
“You resemble your father when you think you're righteous.”
Adrian sat.
“I hope not.”
Celeste looked toward Evelyn.
“You.”
Evelyn did not flinch.
“Me.”
“You stole what my family built.”
Evelyn answered:
“Your family stole what mine built.”
Celeste almost smiled.
“Samuel would have bankrupted it.”
“Maybe.”
“He lacked courage.”
“He lacked willingness to drug people.”
Celeste's smile disappeared.
Elena placed the Reed covenant on the table.
“It's over.”
Celeste looked at her.
“The maid.”
Elena's expression hardened.
“My name is Elena.”
Celeste leaned back.
“You raised a child because your mother manipulated you.”
“Yes.”
“You entered Adrian's house because I manipulated you.”
“Yes.”
“You think signing papers makes you powerful?”
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward Nora's photograph on her phone.
“Raising her did.”
Celeste's face changed.
That landed.
Then Adrian asked:
“Where is the original Halcyon archive?”
Celeste smiled.
“You still think this ends with me.”
“No.”
“I was not alone.”
“I know.”
“Mercer.”
“Confessed.”
“Price.”
“Cooperating.”
“Foundation board?”
“Subpoenaed.”
Celeste's confidence weakened.
Adrian continued.
“Raymond gave us everything.”
For the first time, she looked frightened.
“Raymond is dead.”
“No.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn placed one final document on the table.
Samuel Reed's ownership ledger.
Original.
Celeste stared.
Evelyn said:
“You lost.”
Celeste's voice became quiet.
“You have no idea what you've done.”
Evelyn answered:
“Yes, I do.”
May you like
She closed the ledger.
“I came home.”
