Chapter 19 - EVELYN RETURNS.

Not criminal charges.

Civil.

Fraud.

Corporate theft.

Unauthorized access to medical records.

Theft of confidential corporate property.

Violation of patient privacy.

Enough allegations to turn Evelyn from missing victim into wanted defendant.

Rebecca read the filing twice.

“Strategic.”

Adrian stared.

“Meaning?”

“If Evelyn appears publicly, Celeste tries to bury her in litigation before she can use the ledger.”

“Can she?”

“She can try.”

Adrian picked up his phone.

Rebecca stopped him.

“Do not threaten Celeste.”

“I wasn't going to.”

Rebecca stared.

Adrian stared back.

Roman coughed.

Nobody believed him.

Then Elena walked into the room.

“She called me.”

Adrian stood instantly.

“Evelyn?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“She wants to meet.”

“Where?”

Elena hesitated.

“She said you can't bring men.”

Adrian almost argued.

Then stopped.

“Fine.”

Roman objected immediately.

“Boss.”

“Fine.”

“You don't know who's waiting.”

“Yes.”

“That's insane.”

Adrian looked at him.

“So was assigning six armed men to my wife every time she went shopping.”

Roman went silent.

Adrian went alone.

Almost.

Rebecca drove.

Evelyn had not forbidden lawyers.

The location was a small church outside Albany.

Adrian entered through a side door.

Empty pews.

Quiet stained glass.

A woman stood near the front.

Thin.

Dark coat.

Hair shorter than he remembered.

Adrian stopped.

Three years.

Funeral.

Grave.

Photographs.

Phone calls.

Dreams.

None prepared him.

Evelyn turned.

They stared at each other.

No running.

No dramatic embrace.

Too much had happened.

Adrian whispered:

“Hi.”

Evelyn laughed through tears.

“That's what you have?”

“No.”

His voice broke.

“But everything else feels too big.”

She nodded.

Then Adrian saw her hand shaking.

Not fear exactly.

Illness.

“You're sick.”

“Better than I was.”

He took one step.

Stopped.

“Can I come closer?”

Evelyn cried harder.

That question did more than any apology.

“Yes.”

Adrian approached.

Slowly.

She touched his face first.

His eyes closed.

Then they embraced.

Three years disappeared and remained at the same time.

Love did not erase damage.

Damage did not erase love.

Both existed.

When they separated, Evelyn looked behind him.

“Rebecca?”

“She stayed outside.”

Evelyn nodded.

“Good.”

Adrian asked:

“Do you have the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Safe.”

“Celeste says she'll have you arrested.”

“She'll try.”

“Come with me.”

Evelyn's face changed.

Adrian immediately corrected.

“Not to the mansion.”

She relaxed slightly.

“Anywhere you choose.”

That mattered.

Evelyn sat in the first pew.

Adrian beside her.

Not touching.

She told him the truth.

After escaping Red Room with Claire, Evelyn spent eight months rebuilding the history of Samuel Reed.

Claire knew where Blackbird stored archived medical files.

Marianne knew financial structures.

Gabriel knew Antonio's private investigation.

Grace's letters connected everything.

But the most important evidence had remained hidden inside the original Reed laboratory property.

A wall safe.

Samuel's ledger.

Patient records.

Corporate ownership certificates.

And correspondence between Mercer, Antonio and Celeste.

Adrian frowned.

“Celeste was twenty-two.”

“Yes.”

“How involved could she have been?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Enough.”

Celeste had discovered something young.

Power did not require age when inherited.

She knew Antonio wanted the Reed medical network.

She knew Mercer wanted money.

She became the bridge.

Years later, after Antonio regretted parts of what happened, Celeste did not.

She expanded Halcyon.

Used the network.

Converted private protection into private leverage.

“Why hide from me after you escaped?” Adrian asked.

Evelyn looked down.

“Because I didn't know whether you'd protect me or protect the Kane name.”

Adrian said nothing.

Fair.

Then she looked at him.

“And because Celeste had someone close to you.”

His face hardened.

“Who?”

“She was receiving copies of Rebecca's internal legal files.”

Adrian stood.

“No.”

“I saw the access logs.”

“Rebecca has been helping us.”

“I know.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn reached into her coat.

Placed a photograph on the pew.

Rebecca entering an underground parking garage.

A man beside her.

Roman.

Adrian stared.

His security chief.

Six years.

The person standing beside him through every discovery.

Evelyn whispered:

“One of them is feeding Celeste information.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

Then back at his wife.

“Do you know which?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Neither.”

Adrian frowned.

May you like

Evelyn continued.

“The person taking that photograph was.”
