Chapter 10 - THE TRUST THAT COULD KILL HER

Adrian did not activate the trust.

Not because Gabriel ordered him.

Because doing so could be irreversible.

Instead Rebecca filed Nora’s paternity privately under protective procedures while seeking court guidance on the succession assets.

No public announcement.

No transfer yet.

Elena appreciated that.

Adrian wanted speed.

He chose caution.

Again.

Gabriel called three days later.

This time Adrian traced nothing successfully.

“You listened.”

“I made my own decision.”

“Good.”

“Where is Evelyn?”

“Protected.”

“From whom?”

“The trustees.”

“Victor?”

“Partly.”

“Celeste?”

“No.”

“Who?”

Gabriel refused.

Then told Adrian why Evelyn disappeared.

She discovered the succession clause while pregnant.

She learned someone inside the family foundation had already drafted documents to challenge her fitness as guardian after Nora’s birth.

Mental instability.

Financial secrecy.

Marital conflict.

If Evelyn was removed, the alternate guardian—Gabriel—would inherit her seat.

“Why would you help a plan that gives you power?” Adrian asked.

“I didn’t.”

Gabriel claimed he went into hiding precisely because somebody intended to use his appointment.

Forge consent.

Control his vote.

Or kill him after he signed.

Evelyn contacted him.

Together they planned to hide Nora until the trust structure could be changed.

Simon Vale helped financially.

Margaret protected the baby.

Celeste helped later unknowingly.

Victor?

Complicated.

Gabriel believed Victor initially tried to protect Evelyn but then chose the family assets over her autonomy.

He helped stage the crash.

Not to kill Evelyn.

To make the world stop searching.

“Victor said he didn’t stage it.”

“He lies.”

Adrian did not choose between them yet.

Then:

“What happened in Maine?”

Gabriel went silent.

“Tell me.”

“Evelyn wanted to come home.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“She said Nora was safe with Elena and secrecy was doing more damage than good.”

“What did you do?”

“I agreed.”

“Then?”

“Someone found us first.”

Who?

Gabriel only knew the operational name:

Blackbird.

A private family-security program created decades earlier for “continuity emergencies.”

Adrian had never heard of it.

Victor had.

When confronted later, Victor finally admitted Blackbird existed.

Not his creation.

Antonio’s.

It provided extraction teams for kidnapping threats, witness movement and family emergencies.

After Antonio died, control moved to the Family Foundation.

Victor became administrator.

“Did Blackbird take Evelyn from Maine?”

Victor stared.

“One team was dispatched.”

“By you?”

“No.”

“Who can authorize besides you?”

“One other officer.”

Name:

Marianne Vale.

Simon Vale’s older sister.

Chief compliance officer of Kane Family Foundation.

Adrian barely knew her.

Quiet woman.

Fifty-eight.

Never married.

Worked in foundation administration twenty-five years.

Marianne signed the Maine deployment.

Why?

Records listed:

GUARDIAN COMPROMISED. RECOVER E.K.

Guardian meant Gabriel.

Marianne believed Evelyn was being held by him.

Did she rescue Evelyn?

The team report was missing.

Marianne had resigned two days after operation.

Current address unknown.

Now Adrian had another woman who disappeared exactly when Evelyn did.

Then Nora’s locket yielded one more secret.

The handwritten note on its inner hinge—too small to notice until forensic photography enlarged it.

M.V. knows where the red room is.

M.V.

Marianne Vale.

Not red house.

May you like

Red room.

Evelyn had left another clue in plain sight.
