Chapter 52 - An Afternoon in the Conservatory

The afternoon sun shifted, casting long, golden beams of light through the glass-paneled roof of the estate’s grand conservatory. The air inside was warm and humid, rich with the earthy scent of blooming orchids, citrus trees, and damp soil. It was our favorite retreat within the massive estate—a sanctuary where the frantic pace of the global economy felt a million miles away.

Harper and I sat on a wrought-iron settee near the central fountain, sharing a quiet pot of green tea while the girls were busy with their private tutors in the east wing. The gentle splash of water from the stone fountain filled the quiet space, creating a soothing, hypnotic rhythm.

“You know, for a man who controls half the financial infrastructure of the Midwest, you’re remarkably difficult to reach when you’re hiding in here,” Harper teased, pouring a cup of tea and handing it to me.

“I’m not hiding,” I smiled, taking the cup from her hand. “I’m delegating. That’s the difference between a tyrant and a sovereign. A tyrant has to manage every detail out of fear; a sovereign builds a system that runs on loyalty and competence.”

“And which one are you today?” she asked playfully, raising an eyebrow.

“Just a man enjoying tea with his wife,” I replied, shifting closer and wrapping my arm around her shoulders.

Harper leaned into my side, resting her head against my chest as we watched the sunlight dance across the marble floor. For years, every quiet moment had been stolen—interrupted by encrypted phone calls, assassination warnings, or the crushing weight of impending betrayals. Now, silence was our birthright. We owned the clock, the calendar, and the horizon.

“Do you ever miss the adrenaline?” she asked softly after a long moment of companionable quiet. “The chess matches, the midnight raids, the sheer thrill of walking on the edge?”

“Not for a single second,” I answered honestly, pressing a soft kiss to her hair. “The only edge I ever cared about was the one where I could keep you safe. Now that you’re right here, the game is won.”
