Chapter 40 - An Unwritten Page

That evening, the family estate was bathed in the soft, golden light of early autumn. The sprawling lawns and blooming hydrangeas looked peaceful under the twilight sky.

Harper and Ava were upstairs finishing their homework, their laughter floating down the grand staircase like music. I sat at my executive desk in the study, reviewing a final set of philanthropic foundation grants dedicated to protecting corporate whistleblowers and victims of institutional corruption.

My private phone buzzed quietly on the corner of the mahogany surface.

It was an unknown number, routed through a secure, un-traceable proxy server based in Zurich. My finger hovered over the screen for a moment before I tapped it to accept the transmission.

There was no voice on the other end—just the faint, rhythmic sound of ambient city noise, a distant train whistle, and the unmistakable, crisp click of a mechanical lock sliding into place.

Then, a single, synthesized tone chimed softly, followed by a brief text message pushed directly to my screen:

“Balance verified. Have a good evening, Mr. Vale.”

The transmission blinked out, leaving the screen dark and silent.

I didn't try to trace the call. I didn't scramble for a secure location or bark orders into an intercom. I simply leaned back in my leather chair, a slow, quiet smile touching my lips.

“Good evening, Claire,” I whispered softly into the empty room.
