Chapter 44 - The Gathering at Dusk

The afternoon slipped away into a brilliant autumn evening, painting the western sky in spectacular shades of violet, copper, and deep crimson. To celebrate the final consolidation of our trusts and the complete stabilization of the city’s economic grid, we decided to host an intimate dinner in the grand conservatory, surrounded by blooming orchids and tropical ferns.

There were no cartel bosses, no compromised politicians, and no hesitant lieutenants at this table. Just Beatatrice, whose sharp eyes and quick, expressive hands brought an infectious joy to the room, and a few select individuals who had bled and survived by our side through every storm.

As the candelabras flickered to life, casting warm, dancing shadows across the glass-paneled walls, Beatatrice raised her crystal glass of vintage white wine. Her fingers moved rapidly in sign language, addressing the table with characteristic playfulness: To the only empire in Chicago built on love instead of leverage.

A chorus of quiet laughter and glasses clinking filled the conservatory. Harper reached across the table, her fingers intertwining with mine as she offered a radiant, uninhibited smile that made every sacrifice, every bullet, and every sleepless night entirely worth it.

“To love and leverage,” I echoed, lifting my glass to meet hers. “May we never need the latter again.”

After dinner, while Beatatrice and the rest of our guests retired to the music room, Harper and I stepped out onto the expansive glass-paneled terrace. The air was cool, carrying the earthy scent of falling leaves and the distant, soothing murmur of the lake.

We leaned against the stone railing, watching the city lights flicker on one by one across the dark expanse of Illinois. The world down there was vast, complicated, and endlessly spinning, but inside our circle, everything was balanced, whole, and completely at peace.

“Do you ever look back?” Harper asked softly, her gaze drifting toward the distant horizon where the sky met the water. “At where we started... the gala, the vault, the rain?”

“Never,” I answered without a moment’s hesitation, pulling her closer against my side. “The past is a closed book, Harper. We only look forward now.”
