Chapter 41 - The Final Threshold

I stood up from my desk, walked across the polished hardwood floor of the study, and opened the French doors leading out onto the second-story veranda.
The night air was crisp and cool, carrying the clean, fresh scent of Lake Michigan from the north. The city skyline in the distance glittered like a field of scattered diamonds against the velvet dark of the Illinois sky, its concrete towers and amber lights standing tall, strong, and enduring.
Down in the garden below, the gentle rustle of autumn leaves broke the stillness as a sudden breeze swept across the lawn. For a fleeting second, near the edge of the wrought-iron gate, I thought I saw a familiar silhouette standing quietly in the shadows—a tall figure wrapped in a simple gray coat, pausing for a moment before turning away into the night.
I didn't call out. I didn't chase after her.
Instead, I raised my coffee cup in a silent, respectful toast to the ghost who had saved my life, balanced my world, and taught me how to walk in the light.

The girls' footsteps echoed softly from the hallway behind me as they burst into the study, chattering excitedly about their plans for the weekend, running straight into my arms as I turned to greet them.
The past was a closed ledger. The house was clean. And as I held my daughters close under the brilliant expanse of the autumn sky, I knew, with absolute and unshakable certainty, that the storm was finally, beautifully over.
