Chapter 37 - The New Horizon

The following morning, the sun broke over the Chicago skyline in a brilliant display of amber and steel. The concrete towers gleamed under a cloudless sky, and the city hummed with the vibrant energy of a new day.

I stood on the private balcony of the Citadel penthouse, holding a warm cup of coffee. The breeze caught my hair, carrying the clean, fresh scent of the lake.

The heavy glass doors behind me slid open, and Harper and Ava stepped out onto the balcony, wrapped in their favorite sweaters, rubbing the sleep from their eyes.

“Morning, Daddy,” Harper said, leaning against my side.

“Good morning, my loves,” I said, wrapping an arm around each of them and pulling them close. “Did you sleep well?”

“The best,” Ava chimed in, smiling up at me. “We’re going to the park after school today, right?”

“Right,” I promised, kissing the top of their heads. “Whatever you want.”

They ran back inside to finish packing their school bags, leaving me alone on the balcony for a quiet moment. I looked down at the coffee cup in my hand, then out at the sprawling, beautiful city stretching out beneath us as far as the eye could see.

The past was a locked vault, its ledger balanced, its accounts settled, its ghosts laid to rest. The present was bright, warm, and filled with laughter. And the future—unwritten, open, and entirely ours to shape—lay waiting just beyond the horizon.

I took a slow, satisfying sip of my coffee, turned away from the railing, and walked back inside to join my family.

The house was clean. The sun was shining. And the storm was finally over.
