Chapter 48 - Under the Autumn Sky

We walked out onto the veranda one last time before turning in for the night. The autumn air was sharp and bracing, carrying the crisp scent of the changing season across the sprawling grounds of the estate.

Above us, the vast Illinois sky stretched out in a brilliant, star-studded canopy, clear and infinite. The city in the distance had quieted down, its glittering lights forming a steady, peaceful horizon that no longer held any hidden dangers or rival syndicates.

I wrapped my arms securely around Harper’s waist, pulling her flush against my chest as we stood side by side beneath the starlit expanse. She leaned back against me, her hands resting over mine, her eyes reflecting the quiet brilliance of the night.

“Do you ever think about what would have happened if we hadn't met at that gala?” she asked softly, the wind catching her hair and swirling it gently around her face.

“If we hadn't met, the universe would have had to invent another way to bring us together,” I answered without hesitation. “Some collisions are just too powerful to avoid, Harper. We were written into the stars long before we ever picked up a gun or signed a corporate charter.”

“A romantic and a syndicate boss,” she laughed softly, turning in my arms to wrap her hands around my neck. “What a dangerous combination.”

“Only for anyone who tries to take you away from me,” I whispered, leaning down to press my lips to hers.

It was a kiss born of survival, victory, and an enduring, unbreakable love—a seal upon a life built from the ashes of war and forged into an eternal reign of peace.
