Chapter 47 - The Ledger of the Heart

Later that night, long after the estate had quieted down and the girls were fast asleep in their rooms, I sat alone at the massive mahogany desk in the private study. The house was bathed in the soft, amber glow of a single desk lamp.
I opened the top drawer of the desk—the very drawer where the old Moretti family ledgers, coded hit lists, and emergency contingency plans had once been stored under biometric lock and key.
Inside, there were no weapons, no encrypted flash drives, and no threats. There was only a single, leather-bound journal with blank pages, waiting to be written.
Harper walked into the study, barefoot, wearing a silk robe, holding two steaming mugs of herbal tea. She stopped beside the desk, looking down into the open drawer with a soft, knowing smile.
“Still checking the inventory, Mr. Moretti?” she teased gently, setting a mug down beside my hand.
“Just auditing our most important assets,” I replied, looking up at her and taking her hand, pulling her down into my lap. She curled against my chest effortlessly, her fingers tracing the edge of the empty drawer.
“And what does the audit say?” she whispered, her dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that still made my pulse race after all these years.

“It says we’re richer than kings, and our accounts will never be audited by anyone else again,” I murmured, resting my chin on her head. “The past is a closed ledger. The house is clean. And the future belongs entirely to us.”
Harper smiled, pressing her lips softly against my neck, her breathing slowing into a steady, hypnotic rhythm that matched the beating of my own heart.
