Chapter 31 - Balancing the Books

I stood up slowly from my executive desk, walking around the mahogany surface until I stood over Arthur Pendelton. The man who had managed my empire, who had shared my dinners and offered hollow condolences at my wife’s funeral, was now pinned to the floor by a woman who the corporate world didn't even know existed.
“You... you’re the operative from the Foundry,” Arthur choked out, his face pressed against the cold floor. “They said you were terminated in ’22. They said you were dead.”
“Reports of my termination were greatly exaggerated,” Claire said softly, her voice ice-cold as she maintained absolute control over his immobilized form. She looked up at me, her dark eyes steady. “The audit is complete, Mr. Vale. Every single compromised ledger, every hidden offshore account, and every conspirator involved in the sabotage of your family has now been fully accounted for.”
I reached into my inner coat pocket, pulled out the worn leather-bound notebook she had handed me months ago at Ashford House, and flipped it open to the final, empty page. Then, I pulled a heavy fountain pen from my breast pocket, uncapped it, and handed it down to her.
Claire took the pen with her free hand, leaving Arthur pinned beneath her knee, and wrote two final lines in crisp, elegant handwriting across the last page:
“Arthur Pendelton: Direct authorization for civilian sabotage and corporate conspiracy. Status: Delivered to federal custody.”
“The books are balanced.”
The private elevator chime pinged softly behind us. The heavy doors slid open, and Marcus stepped into the executive suite, flanked by four federal marshals bearing sealed warrants and tactical containment gear.
“Boss,” Marcus reported crisply, taking in the scene without a flicker of surprise. “The perimeter is locked down. The federal marshals have verified the Project Janus files. Arthur Pendelton’s arrest warrant has just been officially signed by the Attorney General.”

“Take him away, Marcus,” I said, looking down at Arthur as federal agents moved in, hauling the disgraced COO off the marble floor and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.
Arthur didn't struggle. As they dragged him toward the elevator, his eyes met mine one last time—filled not with anger, but with the cold realization that no matter how high you build a corporate empire, the truth will always find a way to audit the foundation.
