Chapter 46 - The Chattering Hallway

The quiet reflection of the veranda was broken by an explosion of joyful, uncontainable energy from within the estate.

The girls' footsteps echoed softly from the hallway behind me as they burst into the study, chattering excitedly about their plans for the weekend, running straight into my arms as I turned from the French doors to greet them. Laughter spilled from their lips like bubbling water, filling the cavernous study with a vibrant, living warmth that no fortress of steel or syndicate gold could ever replicate.

I dropped to one knee, catching them both in a sweeping, protective embrace as they tumbled against my chest, talking a mile a minute about art projects, riding lessons, and weekend baking plans.

“Dad! You promised we could check out the new riding stables up by Lake Geneva this weekend!” Chloe exclaimed, her eyes wide with eager anticipation.

“And we’re going to help Beatrice bake raspberry tarts for the foundation gala!” Maya chimed in right behind her, her small hands grabbing my lapels.

I laughed—a deep, resonant sound born of absolute happiness—and pulled them both tight against my heart. “Promises made to my favorite girls are never broken. Stables on Saturday, tarts on Sunday. Deal?”

“Deal!” they shouted in unison, pressing a chorus of quick, enthusiastic kisses to my cheeks before darting off toward the conservatory to show Harper their school drawings.

I stood up slowly, brushing down my jacket, watching them run down the long, brilliantly lit hallway. The contrast between the cold, merciless halls of power I had inherited and the joyful, laughter-filled home I had built was staggering. We hadn't just conquered Chicago; we had redeemed it.
