Chapter 44 - The Four-Minute Window

The seconds ticking down on the monitor hissed like a venomous snake in the silent control room.
00:03:45... 00:03:44...
Ronan didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. He didn't try to negotiate with a madman. He lunged across the room, grabbed David Vance by the throat with one massive hand, and slammed him against the steel electrical panel with enough force to crack the casing.
“The disarm code!” Ronan roared into David’s face, his voice vibrating with lethal fury. “Give me the code right now, or I’ll skip the bullet and throw you into the blast furnace yourself!”
“You... you have to hack it!” David gasped, his eyes bulging as oxygen was squeezed from his lungs. “It’s a rolling biometric hash! If you enter it wrong once, the detonator trips instantly!”
I didn't panic. Panic was for amateurs. I dropped my tactical pack to the concrete floor, snapped open my ruggedized laptop, and plugged a bypass cable directly into the auxiliary port of David’s master transmitter.
“Ronan, hold him still,” I commanded, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed.
Lines of green hexadecimal code cascaded down my screen. David’s custom encryption protocol was complex, but as I analyzed the syntax, a familiar pattern emerged—the exact same sloppy coding structure he had used back when we worked in the legal district together.
00:02:15... 00:02:14...
“Thea, talk to me,” Ronan demanded, keeping one hand clamped around David’s throat while his other hand hovered near his rifle. “How much time do we have?”
“Two minutes,” I said, my voice completely steady, ignoring the sweat trickling down my temple. “He didn't use a biometric hash. He used a static MD5 hash based on his mother’s birthday and an old zip code. Typical corporate coward.”
I hit Enter on the keyboard.

The screen flashed violently from green to a stark, beautiful solid blue.
A soft, electronic chime echoed through the control room. On the monitoring console, the countdown clock froze, sputtered once, and then vanished entirely, replaced by the words: “REMOTE DETONATION ABORTED. SYSTEM SECURED.”
