Chương 18 - The Family DinnerThat evening, the grand dining hall of Raven Hill was set for four.

Gone were the armed enforcers standing guard by the corner moldings; gone was the oppressive, suffocating tension that usually accompanied formal meals in this fortress. In its place was the warm, flickering glow of two dozen tapered candles reflecting off crystal stemware and polished silver.
Poppy sat happily between Evelyn and Marcus, chattering away about her new private school, proudly showing off a watercolor painting of a blue cat she had made that afternoon.
Evelyn chuckled, her frail hand patting Marcus’s arm. “You raised a remarkably resilient girl, Mr. Vance. The Cains are notoriously stubborn, but Thea inherited a spine made of forged titanium.”
Marcus smiled proudly, though he still occasionally cast nervous sideways glances at Ronan, who sat at the head of the long mahogany table, quietly carving a roasted prime rib with surgical precision.
“I always worried about her,” Marcus admitted, taking a sip of vintage red wine. “After the flood took everything, she had nothing left. I blamed myself for not being there.”
“You were surviving, Marcus,” I said gently from across the table, passing a bowl of roasted garlic potatoes. “Just like I was.”
Ronan placed a thick, perfectly sliced piece of meat onto my plate, his fingers brushing against mine for a lingering, deliberate second. His touch sent a pleasant electric shock straight up my arm.
“The past is buried,” Ronan stated, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable finality that made even Marcus sit up a little straighter. “From this night forward, the Vance family and the Cain family share a single table under this roof. Anyone who has a problem with that can take it up with me in the cellar.”
Evelyn rolled her eyes playfully. “Must you always threaten people with the cellar, Ronan? It’s terribly cliché for a mafia boss.”
“It’s effective, Mother,” Ronan smirked, raising his wine glass toward me. “And effectiveness is the only metric that matters.”
Dinner proceeded with an easy, domestic warmth that would have seemed impossible just a month prior. Watching my uncle laugh at one of Evelyn’s dry sarcastic remarks while Poppy drew a picture of a dragon on her napkin with a silver spoon, I felt a profound, overwhelming sense of peace wash over me.
For four years, I had been running from my shadow. I had lived in a tiny, grease-spattered apartment, eating instant noodles off a hot plate, terrified that a knock on the door meant the end of everything.

Now, sitting in the heart of the most powerful criminal syndicate in the state, protected by a man who ruled with iron and fire, I realized a profound truth:
Sometimes, the safest place in the world is right inside the lion's den—especially when the lion decides to make you his queen.
