Chapter 34 - The Calm Before the Global Storm

The destruction of Aegis Global and the public exposure of David Vance’s framing campaign sent seismic shockwaves through the international underworld. For a brief moment, the Ashport harbor was the quietest it had been in decades. Ships bearing the Cain Logistics crest sailed in and out of the deep-water piers unmolested, customs officials offered prompt clearance stamps, and the federal prosecutors downtown suddenly found themselves buried in an avalanche of legally pristine documentation provided by our internal audit team.

Inside the grand library of Raven Hill, the heavy oak doors remained propped open to let in the crisp, late-autumn breeze. I sat at the mahogany desk, reviewing the quarterly financial allocations for our community infrastructure trust—a project I had personally initiated to fund local schools, shelters, and job programs in Ashport’s working-class districts.

Ronan walked in silently, his footsteps absorbed by the thick Persian rug. He carried a heavy, sealed diplomatic pouch stamped with the red wax seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission.

“A courier dropped this off at the front gates ten minutes ago,” Ronan said, setting the pouch down on the desk with a heavy thud. “Addressed to you, specifically. Marked Confidential / Eyes Only.”

I looked up from my laptop, my brow furrowing. “Swiss banking commission? I closed my last European account audit months ago.”

“Open it,” Ronan urged, leaning against the edge of the desk, his gray eyes narrowing with caution. “In this business, a letter from Zurich usually means someone either wants to buy us out or blow us up.”

I broke the red wax seal with a silver letter opener, pulled out a stack of thick parchment documents, and began to read. As my eyes scanned the lines of precise legal typography, the blood slowly drained from my face.

“What is it?” Ronan asked, noting the sudden change in my expression.

“It’s not a threat,” I whispered, looking up at him in absolute astonishment. “It’s an inheritance notice. A dormant trust fund established twenty-five years ago by an anonymous international shipping magnate—someone who held a thirty-percent silent equity stake in the original Ashport shipping lanes before the Cains consolidated power.”

Ronan stood up straight, his interest instantly piqued. “Who is the beneficiary listed on the charter?”

I swallowed hard, pointing a trembling finger at the bottom signature line. “My grandfather, Thomas Vance. The accountant your family supposedly ruined back in the nineties.”
