Chapter 3 - The Cold Shadow of Ashport

“Who gave you permission to touch my mother?”

Ronan Cain’s voice didn’t boom; it dropped into the room like dry ice, instantly freezing every molecule of oxygen in my lungs.

I froze, my wrist still trapped in Evelyn’s trembling grip, the exposed falcon tattoo burning against my skin like a brand. Slowly, mechanically, I turned around.

Standing in the doorway was the most feared man in Ashport. Ronan Cain wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit that fit his towering, athletic frame with razor-sharp precision. His dark hair was combed straight back, framing a face carved from granite—high cheekbones, a sharp jawline shadowed by a dark five-o'clock shadow, and eyes the color of a winter storm over the North Atlantic.

He didn't look at my face first. His cold, calculating gaze locked onto my wrist, tracing the exact lines of the falcon tattoo before slowly rising to meet my wide, terrified eyes.

"Release her arm," Ronan commanded quietly, taking two measured steps into the room.

Evelyn’s fingers slowly unclasped from my skin, though her eyes remained fixed on my face with a mixture of terror and desperate hope.

"I was... I was just assisting her with her medication, Mr. Cain," I managed to say, my voice sounding miraculously steady despite the roaring of blood in my ears. "She was experiencing acute angina. The previous maids missed the emergency nitro bottle hidden in the drawer."

Ronan stopped three feet away. Up close, his presence was suffocatingly heavy—the aura of a apex predator who didn't need to raise his voice to remind everyone in the room who held the leash.

"Beacon Staffing sent a generic cleaning maid with advanced medical training," Ronan noted, his tone flat, devoid of warmth or belief. "And an intricate, custom-designed underworld tattoo that hasn't been inked on anyone in this city since the Blackwood syndicate dissolved four years ago."

"It's just body art," I said, tucking my arm behind my back and pulling the uniform sleeve down over the mark. "I got it when I was younger. It doesn't mean anything."

"In this house, everything means something," Ronan replied smoothly. He didn't yell. He didn't call security. He simply turned to the doorway where two massive bodyguards in black suits materialized out of the shadows. "Take her down to the west study. Wait for me there."
