Chapter 27 - The Echoes of a Distant Storm

The tranquil days at Raven Hill were a rare luxury, and like all things forged in the underworld, they were never meant to last forever.

It was a brisk Tuesday evening when the fragile peace was shattered once again. The sun had dipped below the Ashport horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the stone facade of the estate. Inside the grand dining hall, Evelyn, Marcus, Poppy, and I were seated for dinner, wrapped in the comforting hum of domestic normalcy. Ronan sat at the head of the table, his eyes dark and distracted, tracing the rim of his crystal wine glass with a thumb that bore the faint scar of an old switchblade nick.

The heavy mahogany doors suddenly flew open, crashing against the interior walls with a resounding thud.

Elena Vance—no, not the magistrate, but a high-ranking federal prosecutor who had long waged a quiet war against the Ashport syndicates—stood in the doorway. Flanked by four tactical federal agents with automatic rifles raised, she looked less like a legal official and more like a general leading a frontline assault.

“Nobody moves!” Elena’s voice cut through the cavernous room like shattering glass.

Poppy let out a sharp gasp, dropping her silver spoon against her plate. I instantly pulled my daughter close, shielding her head against my chest, while Marcus stood up defensively, knocking his chair backward.

Ronan didn't flinch. He didn't even drop his wine glass. He set it down deliberately, the crystal clicking softly against the polished wood, and slowly rose to his feet. He towered over the federal prosecutor, his stormy gray eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

“Prosecutor Vance,” Ronan said, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm it made the hairs on my arms stand up. “You’re trespassing on private property without a valid military or federal warrant. My security detail usually feeds people who do that to the estate hounds.”

Elena didn't blink. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor, and tossed a heavy manila folder directly onto the center of the dining table, scattering our silverware.

“You can keep your dogs, Mr. Cain,” Elena snapped, her eyes blazing with righteous fury. “Because you’re not looking at a routine trespass. That file contains newly declassified international intelligence linking your primary European shipping lines directly to an international arms ring in the Balkans.”

I stood up slowly from my seat, gently handing a trembling Poppy over to Marcus. “Take her to the East Wing, Uncle Marcus. Lock the security doors behind you.”

“Thea—,” Marcus started, looking terrified.

“Do it,” I commanded, my voice carrying the absolute authority of a woman who refused to watch her family torn apart again.

As Marcus hurried away with Poppy, I stepped around the dining table, stopping right beside Ronan. My shoulder brushed against his dark suit jacket, a silent declaration that whatever war was coming, we would face it side by side.
