Chapter 40 - The Warning Signs

The first hint that something was fundamentally wrong manifested not as a direct attack, but as an unsettling, unnatural quiet around the perimeter of Raven Hill.

It was a crisp Thursday afternoon. I was sitting in the conservatory, helping Poppy paint watercolors while Evelyn read a book by the window. My phone rested on the wicker table beside my tea cup.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed with an encrypted alert from Raven Hill’s primary electronic security grid—a silent ping indicating that the outer thermal motion sensors along the northern perimeter fence had detected three unauthorized heat signatures moving through the treeline.

My instincts, sharpened by years of corporate audits and syndicate survival, flared instantly.

“Evelyn,” I whispered, keeping my voice completely calm so as not to alarm Poppy. “Lock the conservatory doors from the inside. Call Ronan on the secure satellite channel.”

Evelyn didn't ask questions. She dropped her book, rolled her wheelchair forward with practiced speed, and slammed the heavy brass bolt into the conservatory door frame before pulling the encrypted radio off the wall unit.

“Ronan,” Evelyn spoke crisply into the receiver. “Sector Three breach. Unidentified movement near the northern tree line. Thea is initiating lockdown.”

Through the large glass panes of the conservatory, the tranquil woods surrounding the estate suddenly erupted into chaotic movement. Three dark figures clad in tactical black gear burst through the perimeter brush, carrying heavy-duty wire cutters and pneumatic breaching tools.

Before they could reach the manicured lawn, the estate's automated security turret systems—custom-installed by Ronan’s elite tactical engineers—swiveled down from the oak branches with a sharp mechanical whir.

Clack-clack-clack.

Bright halogen floodlights instantly blinded the intruders, accompanied by the booming automated warning: “Warning: You are trespassing on private federal-chartered property. Drop your weapons or face immediate neutralization.”

The intruders froze, dropping their breaching tools into the grass, raising their hands in surrender as half a dozen Raven Hill enforcers poured out of the shadows with weapons drawn.
