Chapter 9 - Showdown at Pier 19

The rain was lashing down in sheets when the black sedan slid to a halt beside the floodlit chain-link gates of Pier 19.

The air smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and wet asphalt. In the distance, red and blue police cruisers flashed their emergency lights against the looming metal hulls of massive container ships. Federal agents in tactical vests were shouting orders, moving methodically toward a stack of high-cube shipping containers near the water's edge.

Dominic sat in the back seat of the car, adjusting the cuffs of his dark shirt with cold, methodical precision.

"Stay in the car, Maya," Dominic instructed, reaching for his coat.

"Like hell I'm staying in the car," Maya shot back, unbuckling her seatbelt with sharp, decisive movements. "Thomas Vance was using the offshore shell companies I just audited. This isn't just a police raid—it's an operational data breach. If the feds seize those manifest logs, they trace the entire financial architecture right back to this holding company."

Dominic stared at her for a second, a flicker of grudging respect crossing his dark eyes. Then he nodded once. "Stay behind me. If things go sideways, Miller gets you out through the perimeter fence."

They stepped out into the pouring rain. The wind whipped Maya’s silk blouse against her skin, the cold water soaking through her hair instantly. Miller flanked their right side, his hand resting firmly beneath his jacket near his holster.

As they approached the lit perimeter of the pier, Thomas Vance—surrounded by two federal agents and a local detective—spotted them. Vance’s face turned white as chalk. He tried to speak, but before he could shout a warning, Dominic stepped into the harsh circle of the floodlights.

The federal agents froze. Even seasoned law enforcement officers knew the face of Dominic Russo.

"Mr. Russo," the lead federal agent called out, resting his hand on his weapon. "Step back behind the yellow line. This is a federal jurisdiction."

"Agent Miller," Dominic replied, his voice carrying effortlessly over the roar of the wind and rain. He didn't look at the agent; his dark eyes were fixed entirely on Thomas Vance. "You seem to have stumbled into a private shipping dispute."

"This isn't a private dispute, Russo," the agent snapped, pulling out a plastic evidence bag containing a thumb drive. "This is a multi-million-dollar smuggling ring backed by corporate shell accounts. We have all the digital manifests right here."

Maya stepped out from behind Dominic’s shoulder. She looked at the plastic evidence bag, then at Thomas Vance, who was sweating profusely despite the freezing rain.

"Those manifests are invalid," Maya said clearly, stepping directly into the light.

The federal agent frowned, looking down at her with confusion. "And who the hell are you?"

"Maya Vance, Senior Financial Auditor for Russo Holdings," she said smoothly, pulling a crisp, laminated legal document from her portfolio case. "The shipping containers in question were flagged for internal discrepancy audit three days ago under Corporate Compliance Directive 409-B. The digital files on that thumb drive represent an unauthorized data duplication of corrupted, quarantined files currently undergoing forensic deletion."

Silence dropped over the wet tarmac.

The federal agent blinked, looking from the legal document to Thomas Vance, and then back to Dominic, who stood silently with his hands in his pockets like an amused spectator at a theatre.

"What is she talking about?" the agent demanded, glaring at Vance. "Your accountant just said these files were quarantined!"

Thomas Vance panicked. "She’s lying! Russo’s running contraband through—"

"Quiet, Thomas," Dominic cut him off, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register. He stepped closer to the trembling logistics manager. "You tried to sell my port authority to the feds using cooked books and sloppy accounting. And worst of all... you didn't even balance the ledger before you ran."

Dominic turned back to the federal agent.

"Take Mr. Vance into custody for corporate espionage, tax evasion, and internal theft," Dominic said smoothly. "My legal team will forward the complete internal audit to your precinct by morning. Have a pleasant evening, Agent."

Before the bewildered federal agents could process the sudden shift in jurisdiction, Miller stepped forward, subtly inserting himself between the law enforcement officers and Dominic, while local police cars pulled up to take custody of the trembling traitor.

Dominic grabbed Maya’s elbow, turning her away from the flashing lights and guiding her back toward the waiting black sedan.
