Chapter 25 - The Sunset Blueprint

Three days later, back inside the North Side penthouse, the evening sun poured through the reinforced glass windows, painting the minimalist white-oak floors in brilliant shades of gold and copper.

Maya sat at the low walnut coffee table, though the heavy financial ledgers and tax portfolios were entirely absent. Instead, a thick, beautifully bound photo album rested open before her.

Page by page, it told the story of their journey: photographs of the quiet bookstore in Hyde Park where they had first crossed paths years ago; snapshots of the chaotic early days of their marriage before the secrets and lies tore them apart; and finally, recent images of their life now—quiet dinners at Marea, sunlit walks along the lake, and stolen moments captured in the quiet sanctuary of the penthouse.

Footsteps approached from the hallway, followed by the rich, savory aroma of a home-cooked meal. Ethan walked into the living room carrying a large ceramic tray holding two plates of perfectly prepared homemade pasta and a bottle of aged Barolo.

He set the tray down on the coffee table, noticing what she was looking at. He sat down beside her on the plush sofa, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as he looked down at the open album.

“Penny for your thoughts, Chief Auditor,” Ethan murmured, a teasing smile touching his lips.

“I was just auditing our history,” Maya said softly, leaning into his side as she turned a page to reveal a photograph of them standing together on the balcony during their first winter back together.

“And what’s the final balance?” he asked, his voice dropping into a low, tender register.

Maya smiled, turning her head to meet his dark, unwavering gaze.

“Assets: infinite,” she whispered, raising her hand to gently trace his jawline. “Liabilities: zero. And the future is completely unencumbered.”

Ethan laughed—a rich, genuine sound that chased away any remaining ghost of the past—and pulled her close, capturing her lips in a deep, perfect kiss as the city lights began to twinkle across the darkening Chicago skyline.

The ledger was balanced forever. And neither of them ever had to audit their hearts again.
