Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Seal

The autumn wind swept down from Lake Michigan, rattling the reinforced glass of the penthouse balcony, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with the quiet warmth of a home that had finally found its permanent anchor.

Maya sat at the low walnut coffee table in the center of the living room, surrounded by a stack of financial journals, investment portfolios, and a steaming mug of peppermint tea. The city lights twinkled across the skyline like a million distant diamonds, casting a soft, amber glow across the minimalist interior.

Dominic walked out from the master suite, dressed in a comfortable dark grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers, carrying two crystal tumblers filled with aged bourbon. He set one down gently beside Maya’s tea before settling onto the plush sofa right beside her, pulling her legs across his lap so she was resting comfortably against him.

“You’re still working?” Dominic asked, eyeing the stack of financial papers with mock severity.

“I’m not working, I’m reviewing secondary asset allocations for the philanthropic foundation we set up for the children’s hospital downtown,” Maya replied, leaning her head back against his shoulder as his strong hands began to gently massage the tension from her shoulders.

“You’ve donated twelve million dollars to public healthcare initiatives this month alone,” Dominic noted, a faint smile touching his lips. “At this rate, my criminal empire is going to be mistaken for a charitable institution.”

“Good,” Maya smiled, turning her head to press a light kiss to his jawline. “It’s about time your money started doing something respectable for the city of Chicago.”

Dominic chuckled, wrapping his arms securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He looked down at the coffee table, where a small, unassuming leather-bound journal lay half-open beside her laptop—the very first notebook she had brought with her into his study six months ago, filled with her precise, meticulous handwriting and red-ink annotations.

“Do you remember the night you first walked into my study?” Dominic asked quietly, his voice dropping into a reflective, tender register.

“Vividly,” Maya murmured, closing her eyes as she remembered the smell of cigar smoke, the tension in the air, and the terrifying realization that she was auditing a man who could have had her vanished without a trace. “I thought you were going to have me thrown out the window.”

“I thought you were an insolent, brilliant nuisance who didn't know when to keep her mouth shut,” Dominic corrected softly, pressing a kiss into her dark hair. “And then you corrected my grammar on an Italian asset transfer while staring down a loaded pistol in my desk drawer.”

“Grammar matters, Dominic,” she teased, opening her eyes and turning to look up at him. “If you’re going to launder money through a Neapolitan import firm, at least use the correct subjunctive tense.”

Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound that filled the quiet penthouse, washing away every ghost of the past. He reached out, lifting the small leather journal from the table and flipping it open to the very first page, where her signature was inked in bold, elegant script.

Maya Vance. Chief Financial Officer. Obsidian Enterprises.

“The ledger is balanced,” Dominic whispered, his dark eyes holding hers with an unbreakable, absolute devotion.

“And it’s never going to show a deficit again,” Maya replied, leaning up to meet his lips in a slow, deep, perfect kiss that sealed their world together in the dark, warm shelter of the night.

The storm outside raged on against the glass, but inside the fortress of shadows and light, neither of them ever had to audit their hearts again.
