Chapter 8 - The Shadow Ledger

The next three weeks transformed Maya’s life into a surreal exercise in high-stakes corporate espionage disguised as bookkeeping.

She moved into a corner office on the fifty-fifth floor of Russo Holdings—a glass-walled sanctuary overlooking the sprawling docks and glittering harbor of the city. Gone were the polyester uniforms and the smell of white truffles and spilled gin. In their place were tailored silk blouses, bespoke trousers, and the crisp, clean scent of espresso brewed by a private assistant who addressed her as "Ms. Vance" with absolute deference.

Sophie’s treatments at Memorial Hematology were fully funded, and the reports from Dr. Vance indicated miraculous progress. The persistent cough was gone; her white blood cell count was stabilizing for the first time in two years.

Yet, Maya was no longer just an accountant. She was the architect of the syndicate's financial survival.

Working late into the evening, the city lights twinkling below like a fallen galaxy, Maya sat at her polished mahogany desk reviewing a series of offshore transactions tied to a shipping conglomerate operating out of Marseille.

The door to her office clicked open.

She didn't need to look up to know who it was. The subtle, clean scent of sandalwood and tobacco always preceded him.

Dominic walked in quietly, carrying two cups of black coffee. He set one down on the corner of her desk before leaning back against the glass partition, watching her work with quiet intensity.

"You're still here," Dominic observed, checking his gold wristwatch. "It's past ten."

"The Marseille shipping accounts are bleeding capital through three different shell corporations," Maya said without looking up from her monitor, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Whoever is draining the accounts isn't just skimming anymore. They're preparing for a hostile buyout of your import-export licenses."

Dominic’s expression hardened. "Names."

"Vance," Maya said, stopping her typing and finally looking up at him. "Not the doctor. Your logistics manager, Thomas Vance. He’s been funneled capital through a front company registered in the Cayman Islands under a maiden name."

Dominic didn't flinch. A cold, lethal stillness settled over his features. "Thomas has been with me for ten years."

"People change when they realize their boss is distracted by an accountant with green ink on her fingers," Maya retorted dryly, taking a sip of the black coffee he had brought her.

Dominic let out a low, humorless laugh. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her chair, and leaned down slightly, resting his hands on the armrests, trapping her in the space between the desk and his broad chest.

"You never miss a single discrepancy, do you?" he murmured, his voice dropping into that low, gravelly register that always sent a strange, forbidden thrill down her spine.

"That’s my job," Maya said, her heart hammering a fast, betraying rhythm against her ribs. She refused to look away from his dark, penetrating gaze. "Though I seem to remember my job description originally included serving soup, not dismantling criminal syndicates from the inside out."

"You were wasted in that restaurant, Maya," Dominic said softly, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her cheek. The touch was so tender, so entirely out of character for the most feared man in the city, that it took her breath away. "You belong where the real power is."

"Power doesn't interest me, Dominic," she whispered, her voice faltering slightly as his face drew closer. "Survival interested me. Now... I'm not even sure what interests me."

"Let me show you," he said.

Before she could form a reply, the intercom on her desk buzzed sharply.

Dominic pulled back, a muscle twitching in his jaw with annoyance. He pressed the speaker button.

"What is it, Miller?" Dominic barked.

Miller’s voice came through the speaker, tight with urgency. "Boss, we've got a situation down at Pier 19. Thomas Vance just tried to move three containers of unmanifested cargo through customs. The federal task force is already on site."

Dominic’s dark eyes locked onto Maya’s. The playful intimacy of the moment vanished in a single heartbeat, replaced by the cold, calculating fury of a kingpin whose domain was under direct attack.

"Lock down the accounts," Dominic said to Maya, his voice ringing with absolute authority. Then he turned and strode toward the door. "Miller, prep the car. We're going to the harbor."
