Chapter 20 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

Far below the glittering lights of the penthouse, deep in the subterranean security level of the headquarters, Silas sat at his monitoring station with a cup of black coffee cooling beside his keyboard.
The security feeds were pristine. The biometric locks were holding. The northern cargo docks were quiet, bathed in the pale, steady glow of industrial sodium lamps.
One of the junior tactical operatives walked over, laying a printed shift report on the edge of the desk. “Commander, the midnight sweep is complete. Perimeter is clear across all sectors.”
Silas scanned the numbers quickly, noting the absolute absence of anomalies. For fifteen years, his life had been defined by chaos, turf wars, internal betrayals, and constant vigilance against rival syndicates trying to carve up the city.
Now, the syndicate operated like a Fortune 500 conglomerate with bulletproof security and a balanced balance sheet.

“Good work,” Silas rumbled, handing the report back. “Keep the night watch rotation steady. Mr. and Mrs. Moretti are off duty tonight, which means everything runs like clockwork—or I’ll have everyone scrubbing the subterranean drainage pipes by hand.”
The operative swallowed hard, nodded sharply, and hurried back to his terminal. Silas took a slow sip of his coffee, a faint, grim smile touching his scarred mouth. The world had changed, and for the first time in his career, he wouldn't have traded it for anything.
