Chapter 22 - The Unbroken Circle

By afternoon, Ethan and Maya had left the high-rises of the financial district behind, driving out toward the quiet, tree-lined suburbs along the lake where the air smelled of fresh grass and blooming lilacs.

Maya stopped for a moment, looking out across the vast, shimmering expanse of Lake Michigan. The sun was beginning its descent, painting the western sky in brilliant shades of violet, amber, and gold.
Ethan stopped beside her, his fingers still securely interlaced with hers.
“You know,” Maya said softly, her voice carrying easily over the sound of the water, “when I first started working for you, I thought I was just stepping into a cage with a very dangerous animal.”
Ethan chuckled, a rich, warm sound. “And what do you think now?”
“I think,” she turned to look at him, her eyes shining with absolute devotion, “that you were just a man waiting for someone brave enough to read past the first page.”

Ethan reached out, pulling her into his arms, his lips meeting hers in a deep, perfect kiss that sealed their past, their present, and every unwritten page of their future together.
The storm was gone. The ledger was balanced. And in each other’s arms, they had finally found the only home that ever truly mattered.
