Chapter 18 - The Obsidian Gala

The grand ballroom of the Magnolia Grand was transformed into a breathtaking winter wonderland of crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and cascading candlelight.
The city’s elite—wealthy philanthropists, powerful politicians, international investors, and the reformed capos of the Chicago underworld—mingled in effortless harmony, sipping vintage champagne and listening to a live string quartet play softly from the mezzanine.
At the center of the grand staircase, descending into the ballroom with breathtaking poise, stood Ethan and Maya Moretti.
Ethan wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo that accentuated his imposing, commanding presence, his hand resting securely at the small of Maya’s back. Maya wore an elegant, floor-length crimson silk gown that hugged her silhouette, her dark hair swept up in an intricate chignon, sparkling diamond teardrop earrings catching the amber glow of the chandeliers.
As they stepped onto the polished marble floor, the entire room turned to watch them. There was no fear in the eyes of the guests tonight—only awe, respect, and the undeniable recognition of absolute power perfectly balanced by grace and order.
The hotel manager stepped forward with a silver tray of champagne flutes, bowing respectfully. “Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Moretti. The charity auction has already surpassed two million dollars in donations for the children’s hospital.”
“Excellent,” Ethan said smoothly, taking a glass and handing it to Maya. He raised his own glass toward the crowd, his dark eyes sweeping over the room before settling entirely on the woman standing beside him.
Maya raised her glass, clinking it softly against his.
“You clean up nicely for a syndicate boss, Mr. Moretti,” she whispered with a teasing smile.
“And you look entirely too dangerous for an accountant, Mrs. Moretti,” he replied, pulling her closer against his side as the string quartet swelled into a rich, beautiful melody.

They stepped out onto the center of the marble floor, moving together in a slow, perfect waltz that seemed to make the rest of the world vanish into the background.
The ledger was balanced. The empire was secure. And as Ethan held his wife close beneath the glittering lights of the ballroom, he knew that no matter what storms raged outside in the dark, his world would never lose its anchor again.
