Chapter 10 - THE FALL OF AN EMPIRE

The amber emergency lights cast long, dramatic shadows across the concrete floor of the underground garage.
Victor Vane coughed, a trail of dark blood running from his lips, his hands trembling against his wounded shoulder. Celeste raised her hands slowly, backing away from her father until her spine hit the side of the armored Mercedes.
"Lorenzo... please," Celeste whimpered, her voice stripped of every shred of arrogance, reduced to pathetic desperation. "You loved me. We were supposed to rule this city together. It was my father—he made me do it! He forced me to send that message at The Obsidian!"
Victor looked up at his daughter, his eyes filled with bitter shock at how quickly she threw him to the wolves. "You treacherous little..."
Lorenzo didn't lower his gun. His eyes were cold, dead, and pitiless.
"You didn't look forced when you set your clutch on that table, Celeste," Lorenzo said, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "You looked like someone counting down the seconds to an execution."
Evelyn walked out from the shadows, stepping up to Lorenzo’s side. The crimson silk of her gown was smudged with soot and dust, her feet bare against the cold concrete, but she stood tall, radiating an undeniable power that made Celeste shrink back in terror.
"You took my father," Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that cut deeper than any gunshot. "You took his life, you stole his name, and you made me spend five years paying off the blood money you used to buy those diamond earrings."
Celeste stared at Evelyn, trembling violently. "I don't even know who you are! You're nothing! You're just a waitress!"
"She is Evelyn Carter," Lorenzo commanded, his voice shaking the quiet garage. "And she just took your entire world away."
Heavy footsteps pounded down the stairwell. Dante burst into the garage, followed by a dozen armed Moretti enforcers and, behind them, six high-ranking federal agents with badges drawn and tactical vests strapped tight.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" the lead agent shouted.
Lorenzo casually lowered his weapon, keeping his hands visible, completely calm. "Agent Miller. Right on time. Victor Vane and his daughter are all yours. The encrypted hard drives with their money laundering ledgers and murder-for-hire contracts are in that briefcase inside their vehicle."
Agent Miller nodded grimly to his team. "Cuff them."
Two federal agents moved in, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Victor and Celeste Vane. As Celeste was hauled toward the police cruisers, screaming curses and weeping hysterically, she caught one last look at Evelyn standing tall beside Lorenzo Moretti.
Evelyn didn't look away. She watched Celeste get shoved into the back of the squad car with the cold satisfaction of justice finally served.
The garage cleared as the feds hauled the remnants of the Vane empire away. Dante gave Lorenzo a respectful nod and led the rest of the Moretti soldiers back upstairs to handle the aftermath at the museum.
Silence returned to the parking garage.
Evelyn let out a long, shuddering breath. The five-year nightmare was over. Her father’s name was cleared. The people who had destroyed her family were heading to federal prison for the rest of their lives.
She felt a warm, strong hand gently take hers.
Lorenzo turned her toward him. He reached up with his thumb, gently wiping a smudge of concrete dust from her cheek. His eyes were no longer cold or lethal; they were soft, filled with an intensity that took Evelyn’s breath away.
"It's over, Evelyn," Lorenzo whispered. "You're free."
Evelyn looked down at her bare feet, then up into the handsome, rugged face of the mafia boss who had torn Chicago apart just to keep his promise to her.
"A deal's a deal," Evelyn said softly, a bittersweet ache tugging at her chest. "The Vanes are gone. My father has his justice. You don't need a fake fiancée anymore."
Lorenzo didn't let go of her hand. Instead, his fingers tightened around hers, pulling her gently against his chest.
"Who said anything about fake?" he murmured, his voice deep, gravelly, and full of raw emotion.
Evelyn looked up into his dark eyes, her heart pounding. "Lorenzo..."
"The first night you handed me that napkin, I thought you were just a brave girl trying to do the right thing," Lorenzo said, reaching down to touch the diamond ring on her finger. "By the second night, I knew you were the only person in this city I could ever truly trust. And tonight... watching you stand in the fire without blinking..."
He paused, his gaze searching hers with an honesty she had never seen in any man.
"I built an empire, Evelyn," Lorenzo said softly. "But I don't want to run it alone. I want you. Not as a shield, not as a contract, but as my wife. If you'll have me."
Evelyn felt the tears finally spill over her cheeks—not tears of fear or grief, but of profound relief and overwhelming joy. The invisible waitress from Cicero had found a home in the heart of the most dangerous man in Chicago.
"On one condition," Evelyn whispered, a brilliant, radiant smile breaking across her face.
Lorenzo chuckled, a rich, warm sound. "Anything."
"No more dinners at The Obsidian."
May you like
Lorenzo smiled, wrapped his arms around her waist, and lifted her off the cold concrete, bringing his lips down to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their new beginning.
