Chapter 8 - THE GALA OF MASKS

The Museum of Contemporary Art was transformed into a glittering fortress of Chicago’s highest society. Crystal chandeliers hung from thirty-foot ceilings, casting sparkling light across marble sculptures, black-tie tuxedos, and diamond-dripping couture gowns.

Outside, the museum was surrounded by heavily armed private security and discreet police escorts. Inside, the tension was so thick it could be cut with a scalpel.

When the heavy glass doors opened and Lorenzo Moretti entered with Evelyn Carter on his arm, the entire grand hall fell into an immediate, breathless hush.

Evelyn wore a breathtaking, custom-fitted crimson gown with a sweeping train, her dark hair cascading in glamorous waves over one bare shoulder. On her left ring finger sat a flawless eight-carat emerald-cut diamond—a public declaration of her status as the future queen of the Moretti syndicate.

Lorenzo looked like a king claiming his throne, his tailored black tuxedo sharp, his expression imperious and unyielding.

Whispers rippled through the crowd:

"Is that her?"

"The waitress from The Obsidian?"

"She looks like royalty..."

Across the grand atrium, standing near a champagne fountain, stood Victor Vane and his daughter Celeste.

Victor was in his late fifties, silver-haired, with cold, arrogant eyes and the posture of a man who believed he owned the earth. Next to him, Celeste wore an icy silver gown, but the venom in her eyes was unmistakable. The moment her gaze locked onto Evelyn, Celeste’s knuckles turned white around her champagne flute.

"Lorenzo," Victor called out, his voice smooth, fake, and booming across the hall. He walked forward, flanked by four armed bodyguards disguised in tuxedos. "I was surprised to see your name on the guest list after the... unfortunate incident two nights ago."

Lorenzo halted five paces from Victor, keeping Evelyn tucked securely at his side.

"I wouldn't miss this for the world, Victor," Lorenzo replied smoothly. "A celebration of Chicago heritage seems like the perfect venue to settle old family accounts."

Celeste stepped up beside her father, sneering at Evelyn with pure, unfiltered disgust. "And you brought your little charity case? Tell me, sweetie, does she know how to hold a champagne glass, or is she still looking for tables to wipe?"

A few of the Vane loyalists in the crowd chuckled nervously.

Evelyn didn't flinch. She stepped forward, letting go of Lorenzo’s arm for just a moment, meeting Celeste’s venomous gaze with icy composure.

"I know how to spot a traitor, Celeste," Evelyn said, her voice clear and carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. "And I know that when a coward gets desperate, she hires mercenaries to do the dirty work she doesn't have the stomach to finish herself."

Celeste’s face flushed crimson with rage. "You little gutter rat—"

"Enough," Victor snapped, raising a hand to silence his daughter, though his own jaw was clenching tightly. "Lorenzo, you think parading this nobody around will save your empire? The city council voted this afternoon to revoke your port licenses. You're finished in this city."

Lorenzo smiled—a slow, terrifying smirk that sent a visible ripple of unease through Victor’s bodyguards.

"Check your phone, Victor," Lorenzo said quietly.

Victor frowned, hesitating, before slipping a gold-plated smartphone from his tuxedo pocket.

As he looked at the screen, Victor’s face drained of every ounce of color. His hand began to shake violently.

"What is this?" Victor whispered, his voice cracking.

"That," Evelyn spoke up, her voice ringing with absolute authority, "is the complete forensic financial audit of the dockworkers' pension fund from five years ago. Along with the wiretap recordings of you ordering the execution of Thomas Carter on the Cicero bridge."

Gasps erupted from the surrounding crowd of politicians and socialites.

"We just broadcast those files to every federal prosecutor, news outlet, and union leader in the state of Illinois," Lorenzo added, his voice cold as a tombstone. "Your assets are frozen. Your badges are being revoked. You're not an empire anymore, Victor. You're a fugitive."

"Kill them," Celeste shrieked, losing all composure, her voice piercing the elegance of the ballroom. "Kill them both right now!"

Victor’s bodyguards reached inside their jackets for their concealed weapons.
