Chapter 7 - A DANGEROUS GAMBIT

The strike at the South Side rail yards was an overwhelming victory. Dante’s team ambushed Mikhail’s mercenaries from the underground tunnel, securing the Moretti family’s shipments and capturing eight high-ranking Vane soldiers without losing a single man.

By midnight, the news had sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld. The Vanes were bleeding territory, and Victor Vane was growing desperate.

Inside the penthouse suite, Evelyn sat at the marble kitchen island, sipping black coffee. The adrenaline from the evening had worn off, leaving her exhausted, her mind racing with the memory of Lorenzo's kiss in the war room.

The door to the private study opened, and Lorenzo walked out, holding a thick manila folder. His face was shadowed, his jaw set in a hard, grim line.

He set the folder on the counter in front of her.

Evelyn looked down at it. On the tab, written in black marker, was her father's name: THOMAS CARTER.

Her breath hitched. "Is this..."

"Everything my intelligence network could dig up from the old archives," Lorenzo said, pulling up a barstool next to her. "I told you I keep my promises."

With trembling fingers, Evelyn opened the folder. Inside were old photographs, bank ledger printouts, and police surveillance logs from five years ago.

Her eyes scanned the documents, tears welling up in her eyes.

"Thomas wasn't just a gambler, Evelyn," Lorenzo said gently, his voice devoid of its usual coldness. "He was an accountant for the old South Side syndicate. When Victor Vane orchestrated his hostile takeover five years ago, your father discovered that Victor was embezzling tens of millions from the dockworkers' pension funds."

Evelyn wiped a tear from her cheek. "He didn't run away, did he?"

"No," Lorenzo said quietly. "He tried to take the evidence to the federal prosecutors. But Celeste’s uncle was a senior detective in the CPD. They intercepted your father on the Cicero bridge. They put him in the river so he could never testify."

A sob broke from Evelyn's throat. For five years, she had lived with the agonizing belief that her father had simply abandoned her, leaving her to drown in his debts. But he hadn't abandoned her. He had died trying to do the right thing.

"The debts you've been paying off for the last five years?" Lorenzo added, his eyes burning with cold fury. "They were fabricated by Victor Vane’s shell companies to keep you impoverished, trapped, and too exhausted to ever look into your father’s disappearance."

The sorrow inside Evelyn hardened instantly, transforming into pure, white-hot rage. The exhaustion vanished. The fear evaporated.

She closed the folder with a sharp slap.

"I want them to burn," Evelyn whispered, looking directly into Lorenzo's eyes. "Victor. Celeste. All of them."

Lorenzo watched the transformation in her, his dark eyes gleaming with dark admiration. "Then let's finish them."

"How?" Evelyn asked. "Victor is locked inside his Lake Forest fortress. You can't just storm it without starting a full-scale war that brings the National Guard into the city."

"We don't storm it," Lorenzo said, leaning in. "We make him come to us."

"How do we do that?"

"Tomorrow night is the annual Chicago Heritage Gala at the Museum of Contemporary Art," Lorenzo explained. "Every corrupt politician, every billionaire, and every syndicate boss in the Midwest will be there. It is neutral ground. Victor Vane is the chairman of the board. He cannot afford to skip it without admitting he has lost control of the city."

"And Celeste will be there," Evelyn realized.

"Yes," Lorenzo said. "We walk into that gala together. We expose the evidence your father died trying to deliver. And when Victor tries to strike back in public... we end him once and for all."

Evelyn looked at the folder on the counter, then at the man sitting beside her—the man who had given her justice when the world had given her nothing.

"I'm in," she said firmly.
