Chapter 6 - WHISPERS IN THE SHADOWS

The elevator opened onto the executive penthouse floor of Moretti Tower, but Dante was already waiting at the threshold, a tablet in his hand and a grim expression etched into his weathered face.
"Boss," Dante said, not even glancing at Evelyn's glamorous dress. "We have a problem. Victor Vane just mobilized his South Side crews. They're shutting down the freight terminals at the rail yards."
Lorenzo’s demeanor shifted instantly from the charismatic protector back to the ruthless warlord. "How many men?"
"Fifty, maybe sixty. All wearing tactical gear. They’re intercepting our incoming shipments from the coast. If they burn those containers, we lose eighty million in collateral before midnight."
Lorenzo walked briskly down the corridor toward his private war room, Evelyn keeping pace beside him. "Where is Victor?"
"Hiding at his compound in Lake Forest. But he sent his lead enforcer, Mikhail—the Russian mercenary he brought in last month. Mikhail is running the rail yard op."
They entered the war room, a high-tech command center lined with monitors displaying live satellite feeds and traffic cameras across Chicago. Five of Lorenzo’s top lieutenants were already gathered around a massive oak table, arguing in heated whispers.
When Evelyn walked in, the room fell silent.
A burly, gray-haired capo named Sal scowled openly. "Lorenzo, with all due respect, what is she doing in here? This is high-level family business. She's a waitress from Cicero."
Before Sal could finish his sentence, Lorenzo moved with blinding speed. He snatched a heavy crystal decanter from the side table and slammed it onto the oak desk an inch from Sal's fingers, the glass cracking with a sharp snap.
"She is my fiancée," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "And she has shown more loyalty in one night than half the politicians on our payroll. If anyone in this room questions her presence again, I will personally throw them off the balcony. Am I clear?"
Sal swallowed hard, turning pale, and nodded quickly. "Clear, boss."
Evelyn felt a strange surge of warmth in her chest, but she didn't let it distract her. She looked past Sal at the monitors displaying the blueprints of the South Side rail yards.
Her eyes narrowed. The layout of the tracks, the old brick switching towers, the rusted storage warehouses...
"Wait," Evelyn said aloud, stepping toward the main screen.
The lieutenants looked at her, but nobody dared tell her to shut up this time.
Lorenzo looked at her, his brow furrowing slightly. "What do you see, Evelyn?"
Evelyn pointed at the monitor showing Warehouse 14 near the southern perimeter. "That warehouse. It’s supposed to be an old cold-storage facility, right?"
"Yeah," Dante replied, squinting at the screen. "Hasn't been used in ten years."
"My father used to run high-stakes poker games in the basement of that exact building," Evelyn said, her memories rushing back from when she was twelve years old, sitting on the cold concrete steps waiting for her father to finish his hands. "There’s an old subterranean drainage tunnel that runs beneath the tracks directly into the central hub of Warehouse 14. If Mikhail’s men are setting up a perimeter at the front gates, they’ll leave the south tunnel completely unguarded because the city sealed the road above it five years ago."
The room went dead silent.
Dante scrambled to pull up old city infrastructure blueprints on his tablet, zooming in on the sector Evelyn had pointed out. His eyes widened.
"She’s right," Dante breathed. "There’s a direct underground bypass straight into the heart of their staging area. We don't have to fight through their frontline blockade. We can insert a strike team directly beneath them."
Lorenzo turned to look at Evelyn. His eyes held an expression of profound respect—and something much warmer, much deeper, that made her pulse quicken.
"You continue to surprise me, Miss Carter," Lorenzo said softly.
"My dad was a degenerate," Evelyn said softly, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. "But he taught me to always look for the exits."
Lorenzo turned back to his men, his voice snapping with absolute authority. "Dante, take twelve men through that south tunnel. Flank Mikhail before he realizes the trap is sprung. Marco, secure the perimeter. We end this rail yard blockade tonight."
"Yes, boss!" Dante shouted, leading the men out of the room in a rush of organized chaos.
Within minutes, the war room emptied, leaving only Lorenzo and Evelyn standing amidst the glowing screens.
Lorenzo walked over to her, his movements unhurried. He stopped right in front of her, looking down into her hazel eyes.
"You saved my men tonight, Evelyn," he said, reaching out to gently trace the line of her jaw with the back of his fingers. "You're not just surviving in this world. You were built for it."
Evelyn looked up at him, her heart beating frantically against her ribs. "I just want this nightmare to end, Lorenzo. I want to know who killed my father. I want to be free."
"I promised you the truth," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a tender, earnest whisper. "And when Victor Vane falls, I will give you everything you ask for. But until then... you stay close to me."
May you like
He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away. Evelyn didn't move. When his lips met hers, it wasn't a tactical move or a performance for the cameras. It was fierce, passionate, and consuming—a spark catching fire in the middle of a war zone.
