Chapter 12 - THE SHATTERED GLASS

Six months of unbroken peace in Chicago was an anomaly, a fragile illusion of glass waiting for a stone. Lorenzo and Evelyn Moretti had spent those months building an empire that thrived in the light, transitioning the syndicate’s dark money into legitimate, unassailable assets. The Vane estate had transformed from a fortress of fear into a sanctuary of love. But in the underworld, power vacuums are never truly filled—they merely shift, waiting for the right moment to collapse in on themselves.

It happened on a crisp Tuesday morning in late October. Evelyn was in the estate’s sunlit conservatory, reviewing a stack of union contracts. She had traded her accountant’s visor for the sleek, tailored suits of a syndicate queen, her mind as sharp as a scalpel. Lorenzo was downtown at the newly acquired Moretti Tower, finalizing a real estate merger that would solidify their legitimate holdings for generations.

The phone rang. It wasn't the secure line; it was Dante’s personal cell.

"Evelyn," Dante’s voice was uncharacteristically breathless, underscored by the wail of sirens. "Get to the safe room. Now."

"Dante, what happened? Where is Lorenzo?" Evelyn’s heart hammered against her ribs, her mind instantly flashing back to the blood-soaked nights before their wedding.

"There was an explosion at the South Side docks. A shipment we were supposed to receive—legitimate steel—was rigged. Lorenzo wasn't there, thank God, but three of our captains are dead. Someone is making a move. We’re securing the perimeter around the boss now. Just lock the house down."

The line went dead. Evelyn didn’t panic. The timid girl who had scribbled a warning on a cocktail napkin was gone. In her place stood a woman forged in the fires of syndicate warfare. She hit the estate’s panic button, sending heavily armed guards swarming the perimeter. The steel shutters of the estate dropped with a heavy, mechanized thud, plunging the sunlit rooms into fortified twilight. Someone had just declared war on the Moretti family, and they were about to find out that the King of Chicago had a Queen who was equally ruthless.
