Chapter 4 - THE GOLDEN CAGE

The safehouse wasn't a grimy basement or a hidden warehouse. It was a sprawling, multi-million-dollar penthouse perched at the top of a private residential tower in Gold Coast, shielded behind three layers of biometric security and armed guards dressed in bespoke suits.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the massive living room, feeling completely out of place. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of Lake Michigan, churning black under the pouring rain. The floors were polished dark hardwood, the furniture minimalist and pristine.

A woman named Rosa, sharp-featured and wearing a tailored dress with a quiet authority that commanded instant respect, handed Evelyn a glass of water and a folded set of soft cashmere clothes.

"Shower's down the hall, second door on the left," Rosa said, her tone neither kind nor cruel, simply efficient. "Leave your uniform outside the door. It will be burned."

Evelyn took the clothes numbly. "Thank you."

Thirty minutes later, the hot water had washed away the grit and blood, but it hadn't washed away the trembling in her bones. Dressed in an oversized cream-colored sweater and dark trousers, she walked back into the living room.

Lorenzo was standing by the window, a glass of scotch in hand. He had changed into a clean black shirt, the top buttons undone, sleeves rolled up to reveal dark, intricate tattoos winding up his forearms—symbols of oaths and old-world family crests.

On the glass coffee table sat an encrypted laptop, its screen glowing with security feeds and dossiers.

"Sit," Lorenzo commanded softly, gesturing toward the leather sofa across from him.

Evelyn sat on the very edge of the cushion, keeping her back rigid. "Did you find anything out about... about my apartment?"

Lorenzo tapped the laptop screen with his finger. "Two men kicked your front door down at 9:15 PM. They tossed the place, poured gasoline across your living room, and torched it. The fire department just put it out. To the rest of the city, Evelyn Carter died in a tragic gas explosion."

A heavy, suffocating weight settled onto Evelyn's chest. "Everything I had was in that room. My mother's photos. My life."

"Your life in Cicero was a slow death anyway," Lorenzo said bluntly, taking a sip of his scotch. "Working doubles to pay off debts that weren't yours, living in fear of slumlords and street thugs. I'm offering you a clean slate."

"Offering?" Evelyn let out a bitter, hollow laugh. "You kidnapped me."

"I saved you," Lorenzo corrected, his eyes flashing with dangerous intensity. "There is a distinct difference. If I had left you on that sidewalk, you’d be floating in a drainage ditch by sunrise. The Vane syndicate doesn't leave loose ends."

"And what about you?" Evelyn countered, finding a sudden spark of defiance through her terror. "What are you going to do to me? Keep me locked in a tower forever?"

Lorenzo set his glass down on the table with a crisp click. He walked over, stopping just inches from where she sat, towering over her. The sheer physical presence of the man was overwhelming—he radiated an aura of controlled violence, a predator who calculated every breath.

"You saved my life, Evelyn," he said, his voice dropping into an intimate, gravelly cadence. "In my world, a blood debt is absolute. I don't harm people who pull me out of the line of fire. But you are a liability as long as you are unprotected."

"Then let me leave the state. Give me a bus ticket to California."

"You wouldn't make it past the toll booths," Lorenzo replied. "Celeste’s father, Victor Vane, has corrupt state troopers on his payroll. Every highway out of Cook County is being watched. There is only one place in this city where you are untouchable."

"Where?"

Lorenzo leaned down, his face level with hers, his dark eyes locking onto hers with hypnotic gravity.

"By my side."

Evelyn stared at him, her heart thumping against her ribs. "What does that mean?"

"Tomorrow morning, I will hold a press conference at Moretti Enterprises," Lorenzo said smoothly. "I will announce that Celeste Vane’s treachery has dissolved our engagement. And I will announce that I have chosen a new bride."

Evelyn recoiled as if she had been struck. "Are you out of your mind? You don't even know me!"

"I know that you don't flinch when the guns start firing," Lorenzo said, reaching out to gently, almost reverently, tuck a strand of damp hair behind her ear. His fingers were warm, sending an electric jolt through her skin. "I know you risked your life for a stranger. And most importantly, I know that Victor Vane will hesitate to strike at a woman publicly declared as the future head of the Moretti family."

"It's a fake marriage," Evelyn whispered, her voice shaking.

"It is a shield," Lorenzo corrected. "A temporary contract until I dismantle the Vane empire brick by brick and put Victor Vane in the ground. You play the part of my devoted fiancée, and I give you safety, unlimited wealth, and total immunity. Refuse... and you can take your chances on the street tonight."

Evelyn looked at the dark windows, reflecting the cold, ruthless reality of Chicago. She had no money, no home, and a syndicate of killers hunting her scent.

She looked back up at the mafia boss offering her an empire.

"One condition," Evelyn said, her voice steadying.

Lorenzo raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her audacity. "Name it."

"When this is over, you find out what really happened to my father. You give me the truth."

Lorenzo extended his hand, large and calloused, a warrior's hand. "Deal."

Evelyn reached out and placed her small, trembling hand into his. The moment their palms met, Lorenzo closed his fingers around hers with possessive finality.

The game had begun.
