Chapter 18 - THE ABDUCTION

In the van, total darkness fell as the EMP fried the electronics. Evelyn drew her weapon, her breath catching in her throat. The guards outside shouted, followed by the terrifying, suppressed thwip-thwip of silenced gunfire. The bodies of her protectors hit the pavement.
The heavy rear doors of the van were ripped open with a hydraulic crowbar. Flashlights blinded her. Evelyn fired twice, hitting one assailant in the chest, but a heavy hand struck the side of her head. The world spun into darkness.
When she awoke, she was tied to a steel chair in a damp, freezing warehouse. Her head throbbed violently. Standing before her was Nikolai Volkov.
"Mrs. Moretti," Volkov purred, pulling a chair and sitting backward, observing her like a prized trophy. "You are much more beautiful than the dossiers suggested. And much more dangerous. The accountant who brought down the Vanes."
"Lorenzo will skin you alive," Evelyn said, her voice shaking but defiant.

"Lorenzo is currently digging his men out of a collapsed rail yard," Volkov laughed. "By the time he finds you, I will have the access codes to the Moretti offshore accounts. You are going to transfer the entirety of your husband’s empire to my network, or I will start mailing him pieces of you."
Evelyn stared at him, her mind racing. She was terrified, but she remembered Lorenzo’s vow at the altar. I vow to protect you, to honor you. She knew he was coming. She just had to buy time.
