Chapter 5 - THE LION’S DEN

The ballroom of the Drake Hotel was bathed in the harsh, flickering white glow of a hundred camera flashes.
Journalists, city council members, high-ranking mob capos, and high-society elites packed the room, buzzing like a hive of hornets. The headlines had dominated the morning news: MASSACRE AT THE OBSIDIAN: MOB HEIR ESCAPES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT.
Behind the velvet curtain backstage, Evelyn stood in front of a full-length mirror, hardly recognizing the woman staring back at her.
Rosa and a team of stylists had worked on her for three hours. The frayed sneakers and cheap polyester uniform were replaced by a bespoke, floor-length midnight-blue silk gown that clung to her curves like liquid night. A diamond pendant rested at the hollow of her collarbone—cold, heavy, and dazzling. Her dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, her makeup flawless, highlighting high cheekbones and sharp, expressive hazel eyes.
She looked like royalty. But inside, her stomach was tied in knots.
"Breathe," a voice murmured behind her.
Lorenzo stepped into the mirror's frame. He wore a custom three-piece charcoal suit with a crisp white shirt and a silk tie. He looked entirely unmarked by the chaos of the previous night—flawless, commanding, lethal.
He placed his hands on her bare shoulders. His touch was firm, steadying the tremor running through her frame.
"They're going to tear me apart out there," Evelyn whispered, meeting his gaze in the mirror. "They know who the Vanes are. They'll know I'm nobody."
"You are not nobody," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into that deep, hypnotic register. "You are the woman who outsmarted the entire Vane syndicate with a cocktail napkin. Remember that. You don't look down at the floor. You don't apologize for breathing their air. You look them in the eye and let them wonder why I chose you over an empire."
Evelyn took a slow, deep breath, letting his confidence anchor her. "What if Celeste is there?"
"Celeste is currently hiding behind her father's private security in Lake Forest," Lorenzo replied coldly. "She won't show her face. But her father’s spies are in that audience. We give them a show they'll never forget."
Lorenzo turned her around, took her hand, and tucked it into the crook of his arm.
"Ready, Evelyn?"
"No," she admitted honestly.
A ghost of a genuine smile touched Lorenzo’s lips. "Good. That makes it fun."
He pushed through the velvet curtains.
The noise hit them like a wall of sound. Shouts from reporters, the blinding flashes of cameras, the sudden collective gasp of the city's elite as Lorenzo Moretti walked out onto the podium with an unknown woman on his arm.
Lorenzo stepped up to the microphones, completely unbothered by the chaos. He waited. He didn't raise his voice; he simply stood there with that terrifying stillness, staring down the crowd until the room fell into a dead, expectant silence.
"Last night, an act of cowardice took place at The Obsidian," Lorenzo began, his voice amplified through the speakers, resonant and commanding. "Victor Vane and his daughter Celeste attempted to rewrite the hierarchy of this city through blood. They failed."
The room held its breath.
"The alliance between the Moretti family and the Vane family is permanently severed," Lorenzo continued. "And because the public has spent the morning speculating on the future of my personal affairs, let me be abundantly clear."
He turned slightly, extending his hand toward Evelyn.
Evelyn stepped forward into the spotlight. The flashbulbs went wild, blinding her for a second, but she forced her spine straight and held her chin high, exactly as Lorenzo had told her.
"This is Evelyn Carter," Lorenzo announced, his eyes sweeping across the room with lethal challenge. "My partner. My equal. And the future Mrs. Moretti. Any act of aggression against her, any whisper of disrespect, will be treated as an act of war against me personally. Have a pleasant afternoon."
Without waiting for questions, Lorenzo wrapped an arm around Evelyn’s waist, pulling her flush against his side, and led her off the stage amidst an explosive uproar of shouts and flashing lights.
As they reached the private security elevator behind the stage, the heavy metal doors slid shut, cutting off the noise of the world.
Evelyn leaned against the elevator wall, letting out a breath she felt like she’d been holding for hours. "Did we survive that?"
Lorenzo stood close, his dark eyes glittering with something raw and electric. "You were magnificent."
"I was terrified."
"No one could tell," Lorenzo said softly, stepping closer until only inches separated them. The space inside the elevator suddenly felt impossibly small. "You have fire in you, Evelyn. More than any socialite in this city."
Evelyn looked up at him, caught in the pull of his dark gaze. For a fleeting second, the lines between fake protection and something far more dangerous began to blur.

Then, the elevator pinged, and the doors opened into a war zone.
